the best sound in the world :)

http://www.status-graphite.com/

on the site there is a cool pic from micheal under “information” than “players”

i own myself a status bass … the same he used during the area of troublegum … the sound is fantastic …

but it´s just no instrument for beginners … the sound is really professional …

Ahhh, Thunder I-A is a bass is it? I never knew that. I always wondered what the working title of Big Cave In meant. Now I know.

There’s a transcript of two articles, one from a bass magazine and one from a guitar magazine somewhere on He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.com (sorry, too much Harry Potter recently), in the In Print section, somewhere, but I can’t be arsed to check exactly. But they are there. They talk about equipment IIRC.

he uses “status” …

like i posted in another bass thread …
http://www.status-graphite.com/status/ukus/frames/usframe.htm

go on this side “basses” —> “buzzard” —> scroll down and klick on bzzard 1 and buzzard 2 … there you can see it …
he plays it live now …

in troublegum and born in a crash and also “infernal love” time he used to play “status stealth” and “status classic”
i myseld own one status steath bass … just sounds like the bass on troublegum and has the same look like when you see the nausea or teethgrinder live videos …

just the best bass in the world. cool to play and cool sound!

they are graphite bodies all through …
and graphit is a really light material and not to be broken … can resist temperatures of 60 to 40 minus Celcius without deformination!

really cool but expensive bass but its worth the money completely!

Title: bass geek message, beware

Hey guys,

Alright, there’s every reason that no-one except Michael should know this stuff, but in case you’re interested:

Mike recorded all the stuff on Caucasian Psychosis/Nurse on a Westone bass (probably a Thunder 1-A), often through a regular guitar fuzz pedal. These basses are cheap and have a nice, woody sound but they ain’t very flexible - you can pick a Westone up for about £100 if you can find one.

Troublegum and Infernal Love are recorded using a Status Energy Matrix and a Series 1 Matrix. These are wood-bodied basses with a graphite through-neck - very high-level intruments and no longer made since ‘91 - the Series 1 has a slightly more complex tone control (dual rotary pot controls bass/treble) but other than that they’re fairly similar. Mike would use both live - one downtuned to ‘D’ (for “unbeliever” etc) and the other (sensibly, the black S1) at concert pitch.

[tatty seaside town: lovely bass, the stealth. Mike doesn’t have one as far as I know but they’re much more versatile than the old S1’s so you can nail the T? tone almost perfectly]

After that, he switched to MusicMan Stingrays and a Fender ‘57 P-bass for the rest of the albums (the P-bass has a much more “ambient” sound so you can usually pick out where he’s using it). IMHO (as with everyone else, I think), this was a shame because these basses aren’t as “bassy” or “cutting” as the Status (and they don’t look as cool) but you do get bored of a certain “sound” after a while so there’s every reason to change, if only to keep yourself interested.

Mike does also own a Status Buzzard-2, never seen him play it, though. Sounds very much like a Stealth with slightly more “bizarre” body styling!

Everything since “troublegum” is played through a Mesa-Boogie 400+ Bass Amp and Ampeg Cabs.

Cheers to Harvey, Dawn, Rob and SuicidePact for helping me put this info together and apologies to everyone else for being a bit of a spod. A man’s gotta have influences!

i´ve seen michael playing his buzzard … on the current tour of course … for some songs
and i have to agree, that the musicman are not as good as the status basses …
perhaps someday the musicman gets boring and he will return to his status days :)

but i have to say, that i played status for 5 years and it never got boring …

my fav bass but its too expensive :(
2500€

6string :) yeah :)

But the sound i get is pretty damn good, in some part depends on your amp and the settings, but the music man is versatile, just f*ckin heavy.

for me, cause i often play on the higher frets … it has not enough frets for me … not 24 … a bass should have 24 for me … but thats just my stile of playing … need that!

Hey, don’t get me wrong - Musicmans are great basses. When I was a kid and listening to “BloodSugarSexMagic” and “Rage Against the Machine” that was the only bass I ever wanted. The funky, growling mid-heavy sound of the Stingray is probably the single most distinctive and recognisable sound of any bass out there (except possibly a Fender “P”).

However, now I’m older and have tried everything from Westones to Warwicks, my ears are always drawn back to the Status tone even though it’s so much the opposite of the MM: really bowel-shaking lows and pinging highs plus that machine “clank” from the graphite neck. Status’ are usually aimed at ultra-posh “session” musicians like Guy Pratt (Floyd) or Mark King, but with a bit of imagination on the EQ they can be made to sound utterly evil (like the live intro to “Innocent X”: “The thing I’d really hate… is to have a nail banged through the back of my neckCLANGCHAKKACLANGACHANKACNAHNKCLANG” etc)

No to be quite honest i’ve only played on a about 6 different basses, mostley sound gears which have nice necks.
however i would like a fender jazzmaster.

also bit of a wierd story involving my bass, got home one sunday to grab my bass for practise with the group i was in at the time, only to find it not in my room, strange as normally leave it their however i am known for playing whilst wondering around the house and frequently dump my five string anywhere, so trotted round my house no sign, call my mate just in case i left it at his house but knowing full well i only used it 2 days ago, the sweat began to pour and i knew it had been stolen!! aaargh, called my mum no one had been to the house, no break in or anything,
next day my mate was off work so he went to cash converters (crack converters), who by anything from people desperate for drugs, and after a lenghty chat found out they had bought my frickin bass, for £58!!.
I panicked as i have no reciept, (i lose everything eventually so have no hope of keeping a crappy peice of paper) anyway i go down to try and reclaim my bass back and give enough details serial no. etc and they eventually let me see it, and see who sold it, it was only my f**kin sister, however they wouldnt give me the guitar as i had no proof it was mine, as my sister sold it though she could recliam it, and the only reason she took it was to pay for
tv rental! I believe i may have insulted her once or twice

sometimes i love my family, other times i wish i had a cattle prod.

p.s when they stole my bass they managed to scratch the back up.

sorry about the rant, tad bit interesting i think though.
what would you do in that situation?

interessting story really

i think i would really really really get angry with your sister …

bass is like wife, you can have sex with it …
but its more than that … deeper perhaps?

Relationsships come and go. but music is the only thing which stays all the time …
perhaps its the only real love?

@mawk: i really love the innocent X bassline … play it myself often before rehearsal …
its really cool … i play a status bass myself, so it really sounds like the live “innocent X” version …

i don´t like basses to much in the middle frequencies …
i love to have the deep and the high and the middle cut out … thats the sound i like … really catchy :)

but sometimes i need an equilazier pedal for some parts in some songs , in which the status sound doesn´t fit in …
it works nice … love my bass :)

Title: THERAPY? basses

Dudes,
Just to let you know. For Troublegum and Infernal Love I used the black Status bass with an Ampeg Svt1 head and an Ampeg 8x10 cabinet. For Semi Detached I used the Sunburst Musicman and a Mesa Boogie 4oo+ through a Mesa Boogie 2x15 cabinet. Suicide Pact was the Sunburst Musicman with the Mesa 400+ head through the Ampeg 8x10, Shameless was the Blue Musicman through a Mesa 400+ and a 2x15 Mesa cabinet.

High Anxiety was the Blue Musicman with various weird heads through a Harke 4 x10 cabinet. In conjunction with all these set ups I normally use a Sans Amp bass driver pedal and Boss Bass Overdrive and Morley Bass wahs for the squally sounds…

Hope you are confused. I am. For the record I NEVER had a Westone Thunder 1a. That is a reference to Andy’s first ever bass guitar but I never dabbled. Aria Pro II when i could afford them!

Other guitars..Status Buzzard, Fender Sunburst Precision and a Sunburst Fender Jazz have all made appearances on record and live…

Hope this clears some of this up..

Rock on low end monsters..

perhaps you choose the sound, cause of the second guitar?

or did you just get bored of this sound … ?
