Do politics belong in (rock)music?

#

Started by Superunknown

Me, myself I never apreciated bands preaching politics in their songs. It’s one thing to try and increase people’s interest in politics and another to enforce someone on your personal opinion. Therefore I’m not such a big fan of bands like Rage Against The Machine, Boy Sets Fire. and Harcore bands in general (well, that’s also because I’m not really into hardcore music;) ).
It was just so bizarre when I was at an (International) Noise Conspiracy concerts and a bunch of drunk kids were standing next to me bawling “Capitalism stooooooole my virginity”. As if these dudes weren’t happy and satisfied participants in this capitalistic society.
I prefer Therapy? like lyrics that actually touch me.

I don’t mind politics in songs, as long as they put the music first. ‘Not In Any Name’ is a damn cool song, and it still would be even if you got rid of the political message in it. On the flipside, i hate bands that claim their music has to be good because they’ve got important issues in them (any read the interview with Nickleback in Kerrang a while ago? *shudder*)

Politics has been a poor excuse for some pretty feeble musicians to pick up their instruments in the past. If you can’t play, express yourself thorough another means.

I agree, I’m sick and tired of rock stars who suddenly decide that because they’ve had a bit of success then they’re entitled to right world wrongs and enforce their opinions on everybody.

Although there have been some spectacular arse ups..Dave Mustaine’s infamous speech about “the cause” springs to mind.

The “Up the IRA” remark he said onstage in Belfast a few years ago?

Politics in songs never bothered me, I listen to a lot of hardcorebands, and indeed a lot of lyrics are about politics. I don’t know what’s wrong with writing lyrics about things that enrage you, music is an outlet so that’s a good way to express your feelings.
And I don’t think it’s to enforce someone on your personal opinion like superunknown says. You don’t have to agree with all the things your favorite bands sings.

I agree with your points to an extent, but I feel that there’s a world of difference between expressing yourself and preaching. Most of the really annoying stuff tends to be away from the music, for me at least. It’s an obvious example, but everytime I see him on the news I think “Bono..oh no!”

I do think politics does belong in rock music, but i think the artist or group should present each side of the political situation and leave it up to the individual listening to their music to decide for themselves if they agree or disagree with their political stance.

Yeah, that’s a valid point, but there is something that really sticks in my throat about some of these guys who seem to use politics to raise they’re profile.

I guess it’d be more accurate to say that I’m not against politics in music full stop, more against being force fed other people’s ideals. It’s almost like treating your audience with contempt in some cases.

Coldplay are a perfect example of this.

Chris Martin (the singer) constantly promotes maketradefair.com (or whatever it’s called). He wears T-Shirts with the link on it, he writes it on walls and in his hands. He’s trying to become Bono 2.

You know, that’s one of the reasons why I love Therapy? so much, I mean when Graham was in the band you had a:Northern-Irish-Protestant( Andy), a Northern-Irish-Catholic( Michael) an Englishman( Martin) and an Irishman( Graham). First of all Michael and Andy are the living proof that it is possible to put aside the origin of your religion. I like the comments a lot Andy did on stage during Lowlands 1998 and at the acoustic gig in The Hague. They always look at the positive side of it and with a little bit of humour as well, for the people who have those recordings as well know what I mean. So, I don’t mind politics in music, as long as it’s not overdone…I think Therapy? are doing it well!

Band like SOAD and RATM are doing a good thing as well, Sleep now in the fire is one of the best clips ever made in my opinion, and” Boom” as well, and don’t forget that people like Tom Morello and SOAD use their money as well to make this world a better place…

My own opinion about poLIEtics: It sucks and yes, te way I spelled it is correct!
