Slight Gripe! / Too much new stuff

#

Started by gb199

Went to the london gig last week and have to say it was pretty bloody amazing - the new songs sound even better life.

One thing that annoyed me though was the predictability of the set. There wasnt one song that I wouldnt have expected them to play. + i think im right in thinking there wasnt a single song off shameless (it really isnt that bad)

When you think they asked us all for three songs that we dont normally hear live but would like to, it a bit of a farce that they didnt play anything unexpected. They asked us for our opinion and then completly ignored it!

Was this the same at the other gigs, or were we unlucky in london?

If you look at the Bad Mother post, you will see they played BM at Oxford which was a bit of a surprise. Tend to agree with your sentiments though, there weren’t too many surprises apart from the fact that Teethgrinder was not played. Mind you, if they had left out Knives, Screamager, Nowhere, Trigger Inside, Die Laughing, Potato Junkie, Stories and Church of Noise we probably would have been annoyed then as well.

Teethgrinder and Nausea were sorely missed. I remember seeing them play Disgracelands about five years who was tops, if unexpected. Dancing with Manson or Innocent X would have been my choice for an obscure track

I agree - this is a concern I’ve had with T? live shows for quite a while now.

Of the 3 songs picked by fans, they’ve only played “Potato Junkie” so far, and they were always likely to play that anyway! They’ve played that for 12 years now!

It would be nice to see each album getting at least 3 songs.

The main surprise for me was just how much of High Anxiety they wanted to play. Its a cracking album and you can see how into the music they are but I certainly agree it is a shame to come at the expense of some oldies

i agree with the views expressed, for a band who say they have moved on from their troublegum days and who never take the easy way out, they still play a load of troublegum stuff in the set. some more from the albums that followed would be more interesting, but of course thats just my opinion…

i don’t think there is too much being played from HA though, its quite a short album.

I’ve seen them twice on the tour and they’ve played eight songs from the album on both occasions. Don’t get me wrong, good album and the tracks are fantastic live, but where are Nausea and Teethgrinder, they are classic!

teethgrinder … really a shame, they don´t play that song …
altough it was the most famous song …

i´d also like to hear turn or something again …
or really like innocent X, or something like that …

animal bones would be “WOW”

its a fair point you make, but I expect that most of the people who went to the shows had got their mitts on High Anxiety already. At the Oxford show I don’t think the new album even got a mention but never mind. Guess I’m just greedy really but its the bands fault for making so much good music over the years.

I don’t know why they keep playin the same old hits at every gig, they must get sick of them. I wish they would give the set list a kick up the arse cause it needs it badly. At this stage its the hardcore fans that have stuck with them and I think you’ll find our fav songs are probably not the singles.

The Paris setlist already seems more balanced as they added 2 songs. If they would drop Bad Mother in favour of Gimme Back My Brain, it would be a great setlist IMO.

And of course still hoping for Teethgrinder tomorrow …

Title: Are Therapy? always playing too much current stuff? (Merged here)

Except for “Troublegum”-standards Therapy? always dedicate most of their setlist to new songs. Aprox. 3/4 of the current album are always played and on the next tour nothing remains but the singles (well, not even them in the case of “Shameless”). It happened to any album since “Troublegum”, which is kinda sad because there is a lot of pre-HA stuff I’d like to hear when I attend the T?-gig in Vienna. And there are also some HA songs which I wish I won’t hear the last time on this tour.

I think if a tour is specifically to promote a new album then it is fair for them to spend a large proportion of the show playing songs from it (say 1/3 - 1/2, depending on set length). Plus these are songs that nobody has heard live before, I would prefer that to listening to the same songs every time I see them.

Instead of dropping new stuff I’d rather they dropped some singles and played more old album tracks. On this tour I could quite happily have not listened to Stories, Church Of Noise or Die Laughing, for example.

Exactly! I’m not fussed on those three songs at all to be honest. I would have preferred maybe Infernal Love, Stay Happy and dropping all of Troublegum except maybe Screamager - instead doing stuff from before it.

There’s not enough stuff from Suicide Pact and Shameless. Plus the extra tracks on the retrospective! Fat Camp and Bad Karma! I want to hear them live!

Absolutely, more SP:YF would have gone down well - Sister is a track I’d love to hear live. Everybody’s heard Troublegum enough times already - time to play some new (old!) stuff.

I’d say a strong proportion of HA stuff is only right when the guys are promoting it in order to make a living. That said, don’t think I’ve ever heard Sister live, and that’s probably my favourite track of SP:YF, so that would have been cool.

Did I hear something about more touring later this year? Presumably if they’re playing the same countries again, they’ll revisit the set list. And hopefully they’ll think very carefully about what to play at Belfast if it’s going on the DVD…

anyone else agree that that is a perfectly adequate selection from troublegum? (taking into account they really would be lynched if they didn’t play those songs)

it just seems to be me that the band are almost scared to let the troublegum stuff go in favour of the albums that followed, which is strange as therapy? are rarely scared of taking the hard option!

on the plus side, its good to see more songs being added to the setlist - i guess they were building up their stamina! i think when the 20 song mark is hit the set time will be long enough.

I don’t want to hear them to be honest and you can add Die Laughing to the list as well.

You are mad!! Why drop one of your greatest songs for a comedy number? I hope the play BM in Dublin, let up prey.

I remember an interview with them in the NME when SD came out, and Andy and Michael basically said that they thought IL was shite, which surprised me. Maybe they still think that way about it.

Regarding Infernal Love, I think the band did slag it off for quite a while afterwards, I guess cause they were having a hard time when they made it so it wasn’t exactly what they had wanted. In more recent interviews, they seem to be more fond of it in retrospect. I can’t remember which interview I’m talking about but it’ll be one that I’ve typed up so it’s on the site somewhere!

Troublegum songs - I wouldn’t mind them being ditched live to be honest, heard ‘em enough times now. Except maybe Knives, purely for comedy value :D

Yep. One mad Belgian. Well, they did drop BM in the Botanique tonight, but didn’t replace it with something else.

And let’s be honest: anything they drop is a great song. It’s just that I’ve heard BM several times live and really liked Gimme Back My Brain when they played it live in the Marconi session.

I’m okay with these songs as they are true T? classics. But what about “Church Of Noise”? That’s the worst song off “Semi-Detached” IMO and I bet not too many fans want to hear it live if they could have “Lonely, Cryin’, Only” or “Straight Life” instead (when will they start playing the latter by the way?).
Also, “Diane” sucks live. I wish they would skip it already! Come on, guys: MORE SEMI-DETACHED, MORE SUICIDE PACT!!!

I agree completely. I would have preferred anything else from SD in place of Church of Noise, mainly Safe or Straight Life but any would have done. As I understand it, Staright Life will be included in the set of the tour later in the year.

More SP:YF would have gone down well - I want to hear Sister!
