Intro from a long-time lurker

Started by The Artful Lodger

It was 1992 and I was in the 8th grade. I had just turned 13 and I had a love for rock music that was unusual in someone so young. My best friend’s father is a DJ, so any rejects would go her way. Anything on cassette or anything that wasn’t going to be played would get put in a box. The DJ’s would take their pick and the leftovers would often wind up with my friend and I. So, one week we got some rejects and one of them was Therapy?’s “Nurse.” I grabbed that one and put it in my Walkman. And I was HOOKED.

It’s been eleven years now, and I’m still a big Therapy? fan. I’ve never seen them live, but I plan on seeing them next time they tour, even though it means a 200 mile round trip. My favorite Therapy? album is “Suicide Pact – You First.” I guess that’s all there is about me. It’s nice to be here. :)

Hi, congrats on officially joining the WoM. I got into T? when I was 13 too - an excellent age for musical education :D

Indeed! I actually remember a few years before that in the 6th grade when I was listening to nothing but Nine Inch Nails and Ministry. Everyone else I knew was listening to boy bands, so they thought I was completely insane! I blame my sister. She’s nine years older than me, so she really had the musical collection with which to corrupt me. :D

Hah yeah, I had much the same thing but luckily I converted most of my friends in the end.

I’m also in the fortunate postion of being an older sister, so needless to say my siblings both have exemplary taste ;)

Yay, I got one right! The Heimlich maneuver bit is the source of several in-jokes for my circle of friends. Actually, Eddie Izzard in general is a source of countless in-jokes for my circle of friends.

I’m a big fan of UK comedy. Whenever any of it makes its way here, either via DVD or TV (BBC America, A&E, etc), I force my friends to watch. So, my circle of friends has a large cachet of things we constantly reference from UK comedy. It’s particularly unusual because I live in a rather agriculture (or redneck, if you prefer) area of California. I love it! No one knows what the hell I’m talking about around here when I talk about the “giggle loop” or say “squish, squish, dahling.” It makes me feel all original and stuff. ;)

Excellent stuff! What are your other favourites? A lot of the Americans I speak to really love Red Dwarf - did the US version ever actually get made do you know? Personally I’d recommend only the earlier series’, it got a bit pants later on.

Oh, no. As far as I know, the US version of Red Dwarf never made it. Who knows how that would have turned out. Oddly enough, a few weeks ago NBC confirmed a US version of Coupling for the fall schedule. Which is scary, I think.

As for my faves, I’m big on BBC “britcoms”: Absolutely Fabulous, Father Ted, Black Adder, Coupling, French & Saunders, The League Of Gentlemen (I’m dying for the US debut of season 3), Fawlty Towers, etc.

Oh, I’m also big on Monty Python and Mr. Bean. Essentially, anything I can get over here I watch. I haven’t found much that I didn’t like. I don’t know if it’s just my sense of humor, but I feel that the UK does sitcoms better than we do in America.

I hate it when Americans remake sitcoms. They did a version of Men Behaving Badly but removed the stuff that actually made it funny!

That’s okay, I wouldn’t know otherwise. Since it’s aired on BBC America here, I just assumed…

WP - a lot of stuff from all channels in the UK is shown on BBC America.

Father Ted, Blackadder and Faulty Towers would be my favourites out of your list - do you get The Good Life? That is an all time classic which you’d probably enjoy. You also need to see The Office (quite recent) if it’s ever aired over there :)

I heard a while ago that they were planning to remake Coupling. Over here it just got dubbed the UK version of Friends so I don’t know how it’ll fare. maybe they’re doing it cause Friends is finishing.

I didn’t like Coupling the first time around, I ended up watching the second series first but then got quite into it. It’s not brilliant but it’s better than most sitcoms around at the moment (ie. My Family, that Godforesaken Jasper Carrot thing etc.)

I am well aware of Vivian’s opinions but I stand by TGL, it’s a bloody classic :D

Yes, another glorious fuck-up for Irish television!

Our national broadcaster - RTE - were offered “Father Ted” first but deemed it too blasphemous for us unsuspecting Irish sinners, so Channel 4 got it instead.

A year later, RTE finally bought repeats of the show due to huge demand from the public… they still haven’t lived it down.

It could have been the best Irish programme ever, but instead gets lumped in with British comedy.

The US version of Red Dwarf never made it past a pilot episode, where they made Lister an all american super good looking type and The Cat a woman. Robert Llewylln was in it though. I’ve never seen it, but I know people who have and they all say it’s shite cause it became the exact opposite of what the original was meant to be.

No, we don’t get The Good Life yet. It’s probably coming down the pipeline, though. We do get The Office, but I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet (it’s on when I’m working and I haven’t overcome my laziness long enough to tape it!).

I’ve heard the whole “Coupling is the UK version of Friends” thing before, but I have to disagree. Friends isn’t half as funny or half as dirty. Friends is a little too clean and happy and whitebread for my tastes.

When you live in this country sometimes you like something a little cleaner!

The Good Life was made in the ’70s, it’s about a middle class couple who decide to become self-sufficient, with much disapproval from their neighbours. It’s not as silly as Faulty Towers but has the same farcical (<is that a word?) quality about it. It’s still shown on BBC2 here so hopefully you’ll get it sometime.

And DO tape The Office, you will love it :D

Spaced? I don’t recall it ever airing here, or Velvet Soup for that matter. You know, it sounds to me like BBC America is really dropping the ball. I’ve had the channel for three years now and they tend to play the same shows over and over (AbFab, EastEnders, So Graham Norton, etc), with occasional one to two month runs for stuff like So What Now (which I liked, despite it getting bad reviews here).

According to the website, there will be new episodes of Manchild, Murder in Mind, The League of Gentlemen, Homefront in the Garden, Ground Force, What Not to Wear and Changing Rooms this summer (the last three being shows that air CONSTANTLY). The only thing that’s premiering this summer, according to the website, is Tipping The Velvet. From all the shows you guys have thrown around, it sounds like there’s a lot more they could be showing. You’d understand if you got the channel. Last night, they showed the same episode of AbFab four times, the same episode of Coupling three times, and episode one of Tipping The Velvet four times. Some variety would be nice!

Eek that is bad! (apart from Ground Force, but only cause I have a thing about Alan Titchmarsh ;)) They definitely need to pull their finger out and start showing you some decent stuff.

Having said that, over here on the BBC we get endless repeats of The Simpsons and Fresh Prince and anything new that I want to watch (Monk, Buffy) they put on at a different bloody time every week or just replace with random sporting events. And we have to pay a license fee!

Tee hee hee! So, that’s who watched Tipping The Velvet! :p Somehow, the show was unavoidable this weekend. They’ve aired the trilogy non-stop since Friday.

I just don’t think they have anything else to run. In addition to running the same shows over and over again, most of them are available here on DVD. I just wish they’d show a bigger variety of things so I could know if I liked some of these other shows.

For example, is Yes Minister any good? It’s out on DVD now, but its BBC America presentation was so short that I never got a chance to watch it!
