i think my music tastes are changing…

Started by mfgeorge

just picked up HA today… finally found a place in toronto that had it… anyway, i’m not crazy about it… there are a few good songs, but overall i feel the album is too pop-punky and is a step backwards… it just sounds to much like a poppy version of semi-detached with a bit of troublegum… it’s very radio friendly and not at all what i’m really into right now… i wasn’t crazy about shameless either, so i’m starting to beleive that, with everyone else loving this album, maybe it’s my music tastes that are changing… i’m not saying i hate the album, i just can’t get into it… maybe this will change after more listens (i’m on my 4th listen right now), but right now i’m not impressed at all…

just my honest opinion…

um, no… i want less poppy, not more poppy… nickelcrap would really be going in the wrong direction… so far i’ve really only liked rust and if it kills me… so you can see, i really like the heavy stuff (sp-yf is my fav. album) and i’m not caring for the poppier stuff…

only time will tell…

I think you need to concentrate more on the Not In Any Name style tracks and less on the My Voodoo Doll side of things. I agree the album is a bit too pop for my tastes at times but there are definitely some tunes in there that make it worthwhile overall :)

I must have listened to HA a dozen times now and I must say I like every song. At first I wasn’t so sure, but after putting HA on loop it soon grew on me, so mfgeorge give it a little longer and you may just be a HA fan as well.

My fav tracks are

‘If It Kills Me’

and

‘Rust’

its kinda ironic that one of the reasons the band looked down on semi-detatched was because it was too light, but its still heavier than the last 2 albums.

but I like MVD - don’t think it’s achetypal T?, but certainly wouldn’t skip it, Watch You Go, or Never Ending.

Would think that it would make a good single if the band wanted to get higher than no. 76.

I agree it’s the poorest song on the album, and quite scary how it’s well in the lead in the “what should be the next single” poll :(

My favourite song is either Rust or Never Ending.

I think the latter would make an excellent single.

My favourite band at the minute (apart from T?) is Opeth. Possibly the best metal band - ever! Despite being a huge fan of the heavy stuff, HA is one of the best albums I’ve heard in years.

I’m not a T? fan to the point I like everything they do. In fact I’d go as far as to say (IMO) they have at least 2 albums which are pretty average and border on dull!

——stops to put on flame proof suit——

HA however really hits the mark and is a triumphant two fingers to all the doubters!

Give HA a chance. Stick it on repeat and I’m sure you’ll begin to appreciate it for the balls out rock that it is. T? are back - and in style :)

this isn’t a dig at you lunacybooth, but is anyone else a bit tired of T? albums being heralded as a comeback, or a return to form, or the next troublegum, or the ticket to world domination ect ect ect.

it seems to have happened on every T? album since semi and it seems over enthusiatic journalists are mainly to blame.

I see your point but to be honest I meant ‘back’ in the same way that any band releasing a new album are ‘back’.

The ‘comeback’ attitude in the press does piss me off though. Fans are well aware that they never went away but I know loads of people who thought the band were no more. I suppose the poor promotion of the last few albums can only have helped with the idea that T? had vanished.

Even the Rock Sound review on this site says ‘Certainly comeback of the year’.

If it’s frustrating for us fans it must really piss of the band :(

Must admit I was a bit unsure of HA on the first listen. But it grew on me and now I love it. I can’t think of a single track I don’t like.

It makes a refreshing change from most albums I’ve heard over the past year. Most seem to have a few decent tracks and then pad it out with any old rubbish.

so i’m on my 10th listen in the last 24 hours… haven’t listened to anything else… and i’ve listened to it in different ways (headphones, car, while on the computer, during sex - oh wait, not that one - yet! :D)…

the following i really like:
- who knows
- if it kills me
- rust

the following have been growing on me:
- hey satan
- not in any name

the following are blah:
- stand in line
- nobody here but us
- limbo

the following are shit IMO:
- watch you go
- my vodoo doll (agree with Alan, worst on the album)
- last blast
- never ending

so what’s that, 5 out of 12… not great… i know i should give it time, and i will, but on the songs i put in my ‘shit’ catagory i really can’t see getting into… i remember when sp-yf came out, i wasn’t really into that, but that was more because i wasn’t expecting it and never really heard something so agressive… so it wasn’t really the songs, although i hated 10 year plan & other peoples misery… now sp-yf is my fav. album, but i still don’t really like those 2 songs… what i’m saying is that as much as you can give an album time, sometimes you just know there are songs that are not going to grow on you no matter what… this album seems to have quite a few of those… :(

but maybe i’m just talking out of my ass and a month from now i’ll be saying how great the album is… we’ll see…

I hate that, too, especially the press keeps repeating with every new Therapy? album that it’s a comeback. These people should know that T? have never been away for fans and will probably never return with any new album for anybody else. Those who forgot T? already will never remember them because T? might never get commercially successful anymore. HA isn’t gonna change that.

hi matthew, i don’t agree with you about the HA-thingy (i like it a lot, and then especially watch you go and my voodoo doll), but the above quote… well, it could literally be mine. i still don’t really know what to think of tenyearplan and otherpeople’smisery, but sp-yf definitely is my all-time-favourite-t?-record as well. don’t know why, maybe because it was fresh, and totally new, maybe because of the fuck-you-attitude, don’t know… i just like it sooooooo much more now than i did the very first days i got it.. maybe *here goes the psychologist in me* that’s the same for you about the HA-album, can’t find another reason..

anyway; hope you’ll start liking it soon - it’s worth!(*we will have to kill you otherwise* ;))
and see you soon around!

The main thing I like about therapy? is their ability to produce diverse music, I can remember sitting in my friend’s flat while he was on the internet going “O I like this, who is it” “Therapy” he would say briefly taking his focus off the screen a new album would go on and I would ask the same question at this point he would reply but with a “I have just told you” voice, but they do sound diffrent which is good it means they are not just “same old same old” this might be a problem for people who want “same old same old” but it is sign of a good band who will not just churn out the same crap when thier fans have moved on, thats why so many bands crash and burn. Our music taiste changes in one way or another and so will theirs, diffrent influences such as personal life, music thats arround you, friends etc.

Not too sure how “Watch You Go” has escaped a public flogging so far, as it’s a pretty poor song as well. What’s in it’s favour though, is the fact that “My Voodoo Doll” is worse.

fair enough, its a matter of opinion i know but i could certainly see blink 128 covering never ending, its hardly a million miles away from voodoo doll.

I think its sad that a band that has such a loyal diehard following a t? gets this every time they release an album.
