Where should we drink before the Belfast gig?

Well?

(Before changing the message boards’ software in August 2007 this discussion contained a poll, which may return in the future)

Title: Lavery’s Back bar

I’ll know very soon whether it’s sorted or not, but there may be a pre-gig party of sorts in the Lavery’s Back Bar.

For those of you who don’t know it, it’s a legendary wee bar at the back of the Lavery’s Complex. There will be a DJ there to play your favourite tunes, which beats the crappy Jukebox in Katy Daly’s hands down.

I think it would be best if we all meet there. Hopefully Alternative Ulster will be able to get the DJ sorted etc and make it into a bit of a party for us. I’m also told it’s not far from the gig venue so it suits all round :)

Is anyone else staying at Belfast International Youth Hostel, btw?

A DJ has been sorted for the Back Bar in Lavery’s, so if you have any particular tastes in music you’d like catered to - shout about it here!

It should be a nice wee place for a party, plus it’s where I first met Michael McKeegan. The chat I had with him then proved to be a starting point for the course of events that led to this gig happening.

Bah, it’s now fully booked. Anyone else staying at The Linen House Hostel (Paddy’s Backpackers)?

I think it’s all fully booked so I don’t think we’ll be allowed to do room switching - I reckon there’ll be a communal area though so we can all lurk about in there, heh heh :D

A.U. - cheers for sorting out the DJ, much appreciated. Keep the music heavy ;) And thanks for meeting Michael and making the gig happen, also very darn nice of you!

It was a chance meeting really, I was DJing at the time, my partner in crime spotted Michael at the bar so I picked out Accelerator and gave it a whirl. That got the ball rolling.

There may now be an after-party in Rampage Skatepark, with yet another DJ. Looks like it could be party-central!

Andy had suggested having a shindig after so hopefully they will be able to make it. Maybe they’ll be up for a pre-gig drink too.

I’m assuming Rampage Skatepark is a club and not an actual skatepark? Is it close to the venue?

I’m sorry to play the “scary Belfast” card, but is it really wise to be walking down Tates Avenue after the gig? The area isn’t exactly renowned for friendliness.

If you’re going down there, I suggest you take a taxi - a pain in the arse I know, but probably a lot safer.

It’s probably always better to get a taxi though.

Completely disagree - I feel perfectly safe in the city centre - not so safe off the Lisburn Road. Different strokes for different folks :-)

Just thought it was better to be on the safe side - with people coming from the mainland and maybe further afield for the gig, I would rather they didn’t walk around at night - wouldn’t be the first time people picked on tourists.

I don’t want to start a big debate on the whole thing here, and I agree it’s better to get a taxi. But I’ve seen many fights in the City Centre - Shaftbury Sq, Royal Avenue, University St etc - but I’ve never witnessed any trouble at all on the Lisburn Rd.

I’ve had trouble off the Lisburn Road AND in the City Centre. I once walked from Adelaide to the Crown and I got given hassle by a bunch of drunks near Shaftsbury Square.

I also once got trouble outside the Northern Whig. Which is pretty near city Centre.
