Fucking hell what an album!!!You really need to check these guys out.I had never heard of Mastodon until the release of this album i had read all the good reviews and i took a chance on Leviathan it’s a very good album(oh and it’s a concept album on Moby Dick),theres lots of hype around this band at the minute that they’re going to be the next Metallica but Leviathan is way better than anything Metallica has released in over a decade. If you want to download some of Mastodons songs i suggest I Am Ahab,Iron Tusk and Blood And Thunder.Anyone else heard Leviathan?

I know MIKEHELL likes these guys so i’ve been having a listen.

Takes a while but now i think they are AWESOME!!

They have a new album out soon, anyone else gonna buy it? I was starting to despair that the future of metal was going to be like, duuuudes in long shorts with shit songs but Mastodon have restored my faith that there is somewhere else post - Metallica to go with heaviness and tunes to boot!

I’ve had my copy since last night and on the headphones right now. I’d say believe the hype. They’ve incorporated more prog-rock in their sound and more dynamics. It could’ve been a bit more brutal but then again, we’ve got Remission for that. The sound is very clear and Brann’s drums steal the show more than on Leviathan. It contains a few surprises, two instrumentals and some really clean singing. Some guests appear but they don’t add nor substract much in the sound.
I wonder, am I the only one who is thinking Voivod Voivod all the time listening to this? Mastodon is like the Voivod of this time: moving from brutal and heavt as fuck but original to heavy proggy out-there and original and even on this one I think the guitars sound a bit like Piggy’s. Or is it just me being on a Voivod trip since I copped a couple of their classic LP’s on EBay last spring?

I bought two album on Monday. When was the new REM complation, and the other was Blood Mountain. REM was classic, but then again, they are classics.

But the new Mastodon album is great, complex and unlike the new Maiden album, the songs don’t out stay their welcome. Love to hear them perform live again, and for longer, unlike their Slipknot support.

Yeah it’s a recurring theme (like the monsters and beasts). First halve of a Mastodon record seems better then the second halve. I think this is just because halve a Mastodon record contains usually more breaks, riffs, dynamics and ideas than a lot of band’s complete records. If I start listening somewhere half way I always discover new gems amongst the latter songs.

Funny that - the song that made me like them was Naked Burn on the 2nd half of Leviathon! I love those buried gems!

Think i might have to get the new album now. I was dubious when Metal Hmmer gave it 10/10. Surely there is no such thing?? That would mean its the perfect album and there’s no need to buy any others which is quite ridiculous!

Or else it perfectly accomplished exactly what the reviewer believes it set out to. If you were at school and got 10/10 on a test, you wouldn’t think ‘Great! Now I never have to take another test ever again!’

Or… would you? ;)
