Yeah, I’m not really interested in current G ‘n’ R though.

I love them when they were young (Appetite era) and they wore the best clothes, had the best hairstyles, made the best music, had a fantastic fuck-off attitude, lived on a diet of drugs and Jack Daniels, and slept with innumerable large breased rock chicks :p

Talking of G ‘n R, did anyone from the UK see Slash on CD:UK (Saturday morning kids’ music show), a coupla years back? :)

They had him on live (God knows why, heh heh) and he started talking about a woman giving him a blowjob in a nightclub, then saying how he collected reptiles, one of which had “bitten the fuck” out of him recently :p

Needless to say, the producers took the cameras off him pretty quickly! :p

You’re wrong on both counts, mate.

It’s a rocking album.

And, OK, Paradise City is the daddy on that album.

Mr Brownstone, Welcome To… etc, all very strong songs.

I remember when I was 17 and the whole Rock City rock night thing was going on. The night for 6-9 months always ended the same. Some say it was boring for the same 3-4 songs to end the night, but some knew that they were great songs, and it WAS the last 15 minutes and let us make the most of it. But for that period of time, with that DJ, the rock night (then Friday, now Saturday, how sad…) ended with Smell Like…, Killing In…, Enter Sandman (in whatever order) and then _ALWAYS_ Paradise City_. It was a dumb mosh, (and for you younger ones, this was at a time when air guitar well… it wasn’t cool, but it wasn’t frowned upon…), it was a mental time. And then we had 15 mins of Sesame Street and similar “dumb” music to enjoy. They played it to make us get out.

It never worked.

Heh heh, our club tried that too. We had some novelty Euro-disco-Country and Western song (the name of which escapes me).

We all started doing cowboy jigs (the looped arm dance).

Wow, that sounds kinda familiar.

The nice thing about Rock City (at least 11/12 years ago) — and I know this off-topic, so apologies in advance — but out of all the places I had been to in Nottingham as a young naive lad, there was attitude everywhere: apart from the bar staff, you would not look in someone’s eyes, unless they were part of your group. In Rock City, you could be balancing three pints (early days for me, when cups were plastic then — very hard), or four pints (in the “glass phase”) and you might nudge, push, or fall, against someone — and everyone is (well, was…) so _GOD_DAMN_ friendly and easy about things. There’s kinda that vibe now, but… whether it’s cos I’m older or whether the clientele has changed, I don’t know… but whilst it’s a “safe” place — it’s just not really the same…

Are there any other Rock City people on this board…?

I’m guessing you’ve only ever been to rock clubs then? That’s the atmosphere in pretty much any good underground dance club these days (some young metallers are finding this out and going as well, which is cool.)

Not true — when I was younger, let’s say from the ages of 17-24, maybe 25, all the clubs were the hardcore rock sorta places. Since then I have widened my spectrum, and to be fair, (in my _own_ opinion) I haven’t been impressed. But having said that, I have been to rock club since, and I kinda feel that “magic” has gone.

Now maybe this is just me being romantic — I think people tend to remember things better than they ever were — but, even Rock City now, feels odd…

Well, I’ve never been to the Rock City proper, and I don’t come from Nottingham, but I’ve been for a couple of nights out there, and ended up in The Rig (have you ever been there?)one night, which was a bit glam for my tastes. It’s a shame, because as I was growing up, the Rock City was one of those “legendary” UK rock clubs, along with the Mayfair in Newcastle (where I ended up spending many a drunken Saturday night during my student days!), King Tut’s in Glasgow, Jilly’s in Manchester etc etc…

I was pretty dismayed to find that the rumours about the Mayfair’s demolition turned out to be true, but I believe they’ve carried on the rock night tradition at the Telewest Arena, whether it’s in a bar there or whatever, I don’t know, because I suppose the auditorium there’s a little large for that kind of thing. (Does anyone know???)

Here in Germany I haven’t really found much of a rock club tradition, although on one weekend visit to a friend in Gießen we landed in some very cool rock club, which was, however, admittedly, as rough as a badger’s arse (as most things in Gießen are), and I can remember a couple of rockin’ nights out in Dortmund at the Soundgarden and Six PM. Anyone from the board go to any of the places I’ve mentioned, in the UK or Germany???

Anyway, the only Therapy? I ever heard at any of the above was Screamager once or twice at the Mayfair, so, that being the case, maybe the good old rock clubs weren’t so great after all… :D

There’s something about rock clubs that doesn’t feel right unless your feet stick to the floor!

I dunno what it was like around your area Alex, but I knew what you were getting at about feeling safe in rock clubs, I think this was particularily true during the early 90’s, when music fans were pretty segregated. I’d end up talking for hours on end with complete strangers who ended up becoming your best mates the next week! The rock crowds were always really friendly whereas you’d always get frowned upon by “the townies”.

I guess the first real signs of it changing were when Nirvana came along ( from my experience at least ) and grunge kicked in-suddenly it was ok for people who weren’t into rock to suddenly start liking it. As industrial metal started booming a lot of the hardcore rockers started getting into dance as well, it had a bit of a detrimental effect as clubs would start playing rock music and people started drifting away from the scene, which meant the only club which played rock music exclusively in my town shut down.

I think in the 4 years I went before moving on, I only ever saw one fight, whereas across the road was a load of dance clubs, and there was always brawls going on..maybe we got our aggression out through the music!
