Now, allroy…that might not be a bad idea at all: I think a lot of people would like to leave a little word here but just don’t feel like taking time to register…

That might also reduce the number of those only nominal members (Karteileichen) in WoM who are registered but never post.

maybe s.o. should tell them they have to register first…or else it’s not working

but it’s really fun to see how hard they try to post s.th…jumping from qouting, to replying, to editing, to searching, to sending mails to a friend, and then trying again to quote…

You just beat me to bursting the bubble, philzilla, but most of the guests are indeed spiders from Inktomi. The good news is that this could lead to more visits from actual people in the long run, through search engines.

So we’re being observed by spiders? Sounds like a plot from a 50’s B-movie- I like it!

What are spiders?

Spiders, also referred to as bots, crawlers, web worms, or web wanderers, are programs that are widely used to index content on the http://WWW. Spiders by name give many people a false impression of what they do. A spider does not automatically spider through the web. They visit and index pages through a normal http web site request. Spiders normally start indexing the content of a web site by a search engine submission. The spider visits the page submitted and analyzes that page and it’s content. Spiders will follow any links on that page and also analyze and index the content of those pages as well. It is entirely possible for your web site to appear in a search engine without submitting it.

Spiders are needed to keep search engines fresh. They provide you with the best content on the Internet that is getting the most attention. They also weed out dead sites that are no longer in use. If your site links to a web site that no longer exists the spider will remove that site from it’s index. Spiders come in many flavors. They are built to specifically index a certain topic.

It is important to note that search engine indexing is not the only use of spiders. Spiders can be used to collect many other types of information. Especially network information and user demographics on the network (what content users are requesting, server counts, connectivity, etc…).
