Suetallica srtikes again, I really thought they stopped this bullshit now that they’re back again with the fantastic st.-anger, but no, I guess that’s the reason I’ll never be a big metallica-fan. Maybe they also have to sue all bands with a singer/guitar-guitar-bass-drum line-up to avoid confusion.

Luckily, now I won’t be forced to stay away from their shows, :D .
Next time I’ll follow the link myself instead of just reading the summary…
But I had a good laugh!

Whether you fell for it or not, I think that the worst part in all of this is the fact that it did actually sound like the sort of thing they would do. I lost my patience with Metallicash after the Napster incident. I understand that you would be concerned if people were getting your music for free, and if it had been actioned by a band who had way lower record sales, I believe that there would have been nowhere near as much flak thrown at them as Metallicash got.
The thing that really annoyed me about the whole Napster incident was the following a) you could download tracks from bootlegs that you would otherwise get ripped off for big time ( something Metallica said theyw ere dead against ) b) rare B-sides that you’d never stand a chance in hell of getting and c) I’ve never bought as many albums as I did when I was downloading tracks and checking out bands I wouldn’t otherwise hear. The whole Napster situation was handled terribly, far from it being a huge revenue loss to millionaire rock bands ( and why the hell aren’t they getting at their paymasters for the ridiculous amounts they charge for the discs anyway? ), if handled correctly it could have been the biggest free music advertisement ever.

that’s the point why i fell for it. i heard a story a bit before the napster thing i think, that they sued a company who named their tyres metalica. yeah right, i bet most people thought that was new merchandise:rolleyes:

same with me, ‘caus if there’s no cd-shop in your town, you just don’t have the chance to listen to new artist that could be of intrest to you and therefore only buy the stuff that you know is good. i bought so many albums from badns i never heard before by just downloading their songs after hearing about them (for example on the wom).

just have to say something, cause of my musicsociologystudy i get to know some new studies about that whole discussion …
a view points:
1. the music industire does not include economic stagnations in their point of view, although any economic development has his stagantions, when you see the development over the years
2. people who download stuff and like it, buy the album afterwards or spend their money for a concert (some people don´t have the money to get both but without downloading they wouldn´t buy the album or go to the concert) so this is a good merchandising for new bands and also any band really …
3. when you look at the past … as the music audio tape arised … the music industrie cried out loud … as today .. the development surely was not like they thought … the sellings were not going little, than before …
4. the music industire as in point1 only sees there seelings … the have to rise and rise each year, but fact is nowadays are more bands then ever. so more bands suck (music industrie wants to make money with the sucking bands too, but does not include some intelligenc by public listeners) … i think its better for artists and for the people who want to buy their recort (and like you all said and like in point2 people buy it when they like it, even they had downloaded it before) that you can download it for free …
things i said, are science and studies over the past few years … perhaps metallica should read some of the stuff and not listen so much to their managment …

How long before Metallicash try suing the hoaxers then?!
It makes me laugh, you are in what is probably the most recognised brand name in metal, you freely admit that you took the name you so furiously protect from a fanzine..in your own words, you “stole” it, you started off by playing obscure english metal bands songs fast so nobody recognised them, you even reworked one of those band’s riffs for what is one of your most popular songs, you relied heavily in your earlier days on people copying your songs to pass to others to get you recognised further. You are constantly going on about staying true to the spirit of your earlier days, yet you do not seem to realise how far you have sunk into the corporate world.
And Mr Ulrich really seems to have a problem understanding why so many people have turned against them?

one good clue is that the story that
looks like mtvnews.com material lives on
scoopthis.com, a joke site.. which happens
to be run+mostly helmed by eric ashley..
who happens to be one half of the suppoedly
sued group, “Unfaith”… who’s never played
shows nor have actual cds available..
well done pr stunt for a 2-man group tho.

I don’t think that is how Metallica got their name.
The version I heard was that Lars was in a meeting of some kind, and this guy was trying to think of a good name for his fanzine. Someone said Metallica. Lars said “No”. He then used the name for his band. Which isn’t stealing it. He put the other guy off the name, then had it for himself. Smart move I reckon.
I could be wrong though. That’s just what I heard once.

That’s a general problem with most things on the internet. Most info is never verified and pranksters rely on the fact that people take everything they read as fact with no question (journalists/researchers included).
We all fall for it, and it’s all very funny (eventually - once you get over the “I am a prat” feeling).
And in my opinion, it’s just the kind of daft thing Metallica would do so it makes seem even more plausible.

I’m pretty sure Metallica was the name of an underground metal fanzine, I’ll have a look through my stuff and see if I can find it.
