Dortmund Westend Festival

#

Started by BKFYA

Ha, I am the first one!!!! It´s sunday night, 00.28h, I´m drunk and I´m happy! The boys did a fantastic gig! Michael had a few problems w/ the bass setup, but when they startet at 6.30pm, everything was ok. 2 hours before I had a few words with them and they were very relaxed. By the way, sooner “…Trail of death” destroyed their own instruments(that´s what they call ROCK´N ROLL).

That´s it for now, when I remember more tomorrow, I´ll drop a line.

Good night

We just arrived save at home… thanks to Mercedes Benz btw.

Oh, yeah,…by the trail of dead burnt their (hired) bass drum… the guy from the company felt not really lucky about that - he had to expalin this to his boss, but a lot of people were fascinated by the burning bass drum.

But anyway, it was so nice to see TPY? again, only the crowd in the front seemed to be tired… or they were just waiting to see ash… was it worth that? I don’t think so.

Thanks to the band for another funfuckingtastic gig.

Neil was fantastic, haven’t heard them play so aggressively for a long time.

The whole festival was great. The weather was fine except Saturday night(but I was sleeping dryly in my own bed then :)), beer was quite cheap for a festival and it was a good atmosphere at the gigs, although a few more people could have shown up.
The best bands for me were Tomte, The Weakerthans and Samiam (God, how great to see them back on stage, it was a blast) on Saturday , and Aereogramme (absolutely brilliant, as ever), Trail Of Dead and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club on Sunday. As I said, T? were fine but it was only an average show concerning T? standard.
and, finally, I think The Cooper Temple Clause, Slut and Blackmail were really boring.

Maybe some of you backstage crawlers can add some more inside information :)

Inside wasn’t meant to denote the inside of the bogs :)
Anyway, there were not enough toilets, definitely. I felt sorry for the girls having to queue for a loo.

They played only 45 minutes, 10 minutes shorter than they were scheduled to.

I was disappointed nobody apart from me reacted positively when Andy suggested playing Teethgrinder. :(

Oh well, I guess I’ll have to wait till the Autumn tour to hear Neil play it! :)

On the whole, the gig was very good (even my mate, who was primarily there to see Ash and is a massive fan of theirs, thought T? were better), but I’ve heard them play far better. My Voodoo Doll is a great live tune though, and I’d forgotten how much they beef up If It Kills Me live. Very Killing Joke-esque… Scary!

By the way, did anyone else like Caesar’s, with their absolutely mental guitarist??

Shame I didn’t meet any of you from the message boards… :( Who were you???

After Aereogramme’s brilliant show we had to rest for a few beer, so I only listened to the Caesars, but didn’t watch them. But I wasn’t too impressed by them, an average sixties sounding garage band (Sorry, if that sounds too harsh). I definitely prefer The (International) Noise Conspiracy. But it was cool to hear their roadie strum the opening tunes from Hellbelly on guitar.

MTV co-presented the festival, but it was announced in the VISIONS magazine that they would do interviews with Tomte,The Cooper Temple Clause, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Trail Of Dead, I think. No T?, not trendy enough :o. There should be a broadcast from the festival in the show Spin on August, 4 according to the MTV website.

…and I´m so fuckin´ looking forward to all the upcoming Westends in the next years. The atmosphere was great, peaceful, and it was great to be at a festival where all the focus was on music. Who needs fairgrounds on festivals, or bungee and shit like that? (by the way, bungee is not easy in the moment in Dortmund…)

A big hand for the Visions and FZW people for this great weekend!!

Me, too. But it was worth it.
The atmosphere was great, except that decent smell of bark mulch, especially in front of the stage. :)

When I first went onto the site, I thought it was gonna stink, but when you got past that bit at the entrance it was okay.

What was disappointing was that they’d chosen to put an information stand (which never seemed to be open anyway) right in front of the football posts, so any kickarounds were sadly ruled out. And what was the “beer token” arrangement all about??? What a struggle to get a beer!

It smelled like Cologne, didn’t it? :D

The “beer token” didn’t cost that much time to get the much needed and deserved refreshing, but it was messy after the T? show to get the scrambled token out of my pockets.
I don’t see any reason for these token as food had to be paid cash.

yeh Steph!! was nice to meet you there too- we decided that you were officially the cutest girl of the weekend! Yum!! ;)

Michael kept just saying “Mikeymoko, wot are you like?!!” backstage, while trying to stop Charlotte from Ash stealing his Therapy? cds outta his cd case!!

T? played an amazing set (no Rust however :() and it was backed up by an even better set by Ash. Me and Tim from ASh stood stage left during BRMCs set with a few beers and it was fan-fuckin-tastic!

Wot a weekend!!!!

Mike

This ridiculous arrangement did actually lead to a new English phrase being coined during the course of the weekend: Beerocracy!

Mind you, I guess it would work in German, too: Bierokratie! :D

I’d love to live in a beerocracy. The foreign minister’s only task would be to import beer from other countries. I might even consider taking over a post in government, e.g. eudcation minister. I could teach people how to open beer bottles with a lighter, one of the T? roadies would have done better then. :)
