OK, I heard one of their songs on a Beavis & Butthead game and thought it was decent, can anyone recommend some good tracks except Saddam A Go-Go?

I recommend We Kill Everything, especially the song Fishfuck.
But you have to see them live, so much more fun than listening to their albums (my cd player doesn’t splash around articial blood and other liquids).

Ok, I will!

The thing is what do you want? Hard, fast and heavy or the goofy punky popppy stuff? Or how about light jazz refrains mixed in with some really crushing riffs?

The thing with GWAR is, and not many people realise this, but they’re approaching their 20th year ( The first ever GWAR gig was supporting Suicidal Tendancies at the 9:30 club back in 83, only they weren’t GWAR at that point, they were called Death Piggy and they were only a 3 piece who decided to wear silly costumes on stage for a one off, what followed was the occasional sporadic appearance-they didn’t really become GWAR until around 86/7-ish .)

If you want a really heavy full on metal album try Scumdogs of the Universe or the current album, “Violence has arrived”.. the problem with VHA is that you’d have to get it on import as Metal Blade never bothered to issue it over here! Scumdogs is a bona fide classic straight up metal album though, VHA is a bona fide classic metal album with some great melodious flourishes but lacks the humour Scumdogs has, as it came at a point where the band decided they wanted to do something which let the music speak a bit more for itself.

For a bit of a mix We Kill Everything is probably the best one to go for, Saddam a go go came from This Toilet Earth, which again is a bit of a mix of differing styles from straight up chunky bar chords to off kilter arrangements.

As has already been stated here the albums simply don’t compare to their live shows, but that said, they could be writing the best tunes in the history of music and they’d still get overlooked next to that! The other thing is that some of the albums ( Ragnarok being the most obvious one that sprigs to mind ) are written around a plot line, the idea being that the songs are played out around the stage show.

Go to http://www.gwar.net and have a look around there, you should be able to download some stuff from there, and whilst you’re at it have a listen to DBX! I know people laugh about them, but the really do write some amazing songs, live they’re probably the tightest band I have ever seen, which considering that some of them are wearing costumes which weigh nearly as much as they do is unbelievable!

He he, don’t forget that GWAR used to open their own shows as The X-Cops! That was, lyrically speaking, some of the more deranged stuff they have done.

They kind of remind me of the Ren and Stimpy of the music world. Don’t ask for an explanation, I really don’t have one.

Like I could forget the X-Cops! There was rumours of a second album from them but since Casey quit it seems unlikely it’ll happen, a great shame..if you get the DBX “Live from Ground Zero” album they finish off the set with “Paddy Wagon Rape” and an awesome version of “You fucked Up”.

Apparently the X-Cops never made enough money for them to justify doing it again, they oppened up for GWAR but toured in their own right and never promoted the link, hence the fact that DBX has heavily been promoted as being a GWAR offshoot!

Oh, and Ragnarock is good too. I guess I’m into the goofy stuff. Like I’ve said before, if I want to go serious metal, I tend toward Fear Factory.

Check out Violence has arrived for some serious metal! I was never that huge a fan of Ragnarok, I thought there was something a little samey about it..probably more to do with the production values.

Oh, and another thing…I just love seeing the name GWAR at the top of these boards!
