mansun (NOT marilyn manson)

Started by not_that_kind_of_guy (a story on the radio)

hello, i have spent most of this evening listening to mansun’s classic album “six”. i use classic in a loose sense as i’m aware that it is not a true classic but i find it rather satisfying. this thread may cause very different opinions which is good. that is the whole point. anyway, i think that mansun were one of the best bands of recent years. i would like to hear if anyone apart from me and a few friends agree as no-one else seems to. be nice please…

Your first different opinion coming up mate… ;)

I think it’s complete shite to be honest, I can’t hardly listen to it. Although having Tom Baker on it is mildly amusing.

‘Attack Of The Gray Lantern’, on the other hand, I think is ace.

‘Little Kix’ was so-so, bit too ballady and slushy for me. I saw ‘em live on the Little Kix tour, they were alright but I can’t say I shed a tear when they split.

I’d agree with Sam, Attack of the Grey Lantern is one of my all time favourite albums and I saw them live a couple of times around that era too, truly great band.

I bought Six, but have to say other than being very nice to look at (I have a thing for gatefold vinyl) it hasn’t had much wear as I haven’t really listened to it that often. I haven’t heard Little Kix, so can’t really comment on that one.

A few years back at Reading festival I saw Mansun play the BBC Radio 1 stage while the Chilli Peppers were playing the main one. I got nearly insulted by my friends who were with me and were big fans of RHCP but I had seen Mansun live before (supporting the Manics) and thought they were pretty good and was worth watching them again. Although I must admit I don’t have any of their albums.

Six is more of a cult classic really,Mansun took their name from a Verve b-side called A Man Called Sun.

look what i accidentally found on drownedinsound.com…

We can confirm Mansun’s fourth album WILL be released by Parlophone later this year. Paul Draper has announced that, as well as working on solo material, he’s been patching together “loose ends since the split of the band”. Titled ‘Kleptomania’, it will be a three-CD package of the fourth album sessions, the best of the non-album tracks from the EPs, and a third CD of rare and unreleased material hunted down at Abbey Road.
Draper, ex-vocalist with the Chester foursome, posted on mansun.net to say: “I will also be writing detailed sleeve notes for the release which should be out in the autumn of this year… New tracks appearing on ‘Kleptomania’ will include some of the songs that we played on the final tour in 2002, like ‘Slipping Away’, ‘Keep Telling Myself’ and ‘Getting Your Way’. A full detailed running order of the whole album will be announced soon and as I get further down the road of putting this record together, I’ll put up regular posts informing you of how it’s progressing.”

He said he’s also busy “with a few writing and production collaborations at the moment. I’ll be launching an official website of my own in the very near future…”

Check their website for the full statement.

yay :D

I had a Mansun song on a compilation CD which now has no sleeve so i don’t know what its called, the lyrics in the chorus said something like - i feel like being a girl. Cracker song.Is the bands other material as rocky as this tune?

“being a girl” is the name of the song :)

there are quite some stonkers on six, but i don’t remember the other two albums being very rocky.more indie-schmindie (i love that word :p)

which isn’t a disadvantage to me.
