If you like the title track, there’s a good chance you’ll like the album as well, although St. Anger is one of the better songs on it, IMHO. I’ve had it for a while now, and now that I’ve listened to it quite a lot I must say it’s pretty good, definitely better than Load and Reload, but most of all different than their previous stuff. It’s very ‘raw’.

Oh, and I think The Unnnamed Feeling is one of their best songs ever (bold statement, I know).

I do still think the drums sound awful, and each time I hear them I feel Lars has been fucked over by the other guys in the same way they fucked over Jason on …And Justice For All.

You poor thing! I felt that way after about 30 seconds of St Anger on TOTP :(

I put it on, feeling quite optomistic after all the positive reviews I’d read and the word of mouth buzz I’d heard, I really was expecting a return to form. What I heard was in my honest opinion was a complete and utter dirge of a record, after a short while I got to the stage where I felt like all the songs were blending into one and I ended up turning it off.

I slagged the album off to my friends who had recomended it, but they all said the same thing ” we thought that at first too, but it really kicks in after a couple of listens”, so off I went and had another listen…but I’m sorry, what I was hearing wasn’t what got me into Metallica in the first place. I was really dissapointed because I quite liked the ” I dissapear” track when it came out.

I keep seeing articles saying that they have the full exclusive story on Metallica and Hetfield’s rehab, how many exclusives must they have given?!

I also saw a mag with Hetfield on the cover and a big headline saying METALLICA-“SCREW THE CRITICS!”

That made me feel quite sad, because my initial thought was ” well, it’s about time you did, you’ve been screwing your fans over for long enough now”.

I think that die hard Metallica fans are a strange bunch at the best of times, they’re fiercely loyal and won’t accept any criticism of them in any way shape or form. In America the average Metallica fan appears to be either a redneck white collar worker or in the military! I’m probably generalising to a huge extent, but that’s going of what I’ve seen, maybe some of the members from across the pond can clarify or dissprove this though?

I felt exactly the same and was hugely disappointed with it at first. I was starting to hope for a ‘return to form’ as well after all the things I’d heard and was let down hugely when listening to it for the first time. However, I did listen to it several more times and started to like it, and now I think it’s actually pretty good, although it’s good ‘new Metallica’. It will never be the same as in the eighties (except maybe for the song I mentioned earlier).

Oh, and for people who are not sure whether they will like the new album or not (so I’m not talking to the ones who have already made up their mind :-)), you shouldn’t judge St. Anger (the song) only on the performance on TOTP, that was truly awful, and doesn’t do the song justice.

Oh, and let’s keep this thread about St. Anger. I hate Metallica too for a lot of things, but this thread is about the music on the new album, not about our peeves with the band.

I’m no big Metallica Fan (before St. Anger, I only had …And Justice… and the black album. But St. Anger (the track) blew me away. I’m no metal head, more of a punk, so maybe that’s why I like the sound of the record. It’s raw, it doesn’t fulfill the metal clichés and it rocks. So it’s perfect for me, but I understand that fans of Load and Reload and maybe even fans of the old stuff have their problems with it.

St. anger is a fanstastic album, don’t be mislead by the single it’s the worst song on the album. But the rest really is great, as loud as master of puppets as complicated as ride the lightning and as dirty as kill’em all. Frantic is a real good opening track, songs numbers 4,5 and 6 are the greatest thrash-songs I heard in years and the last one, all within my hands, is in my top 10 of best metallica songs ever and has a real cool end, you could love that song just for its ending.

This is a terrible album, I’m just glad people are seeing them for what they are. Hetfield with his boot up on a monitor playing a flying v and going roh and rah every 5 minutes he sounds like a dog. I would love to get 20 mins in a room on my own with that guy. They are a “Hard Man” band. Bring back megadeth for some good thrash…
I’ve played in bands that made better music than this album.
Nu-Metal sells but whos buying ——— METALLICA.
