Alien 5

Is now into pre-production apparently, and yes… Sigourney’s still there!

Is this possibly the only franchise to have outlived it’s central character?

No way! I have to disagree with that, the first 3 were great!

Apparently David Fincher has finally managed to get his way and Fox are letting him completely re-edit Alien 3 so it matches his original vision for the film for the forthcoming ultimate legacy DVD box set.

Perhaps he ought to re-shoot it as well? I thought Alien 3 was poor - a real shame after 1 & 2.

Anyone know who’s directing? This franchise has had some star directors. Perhaps if they get Tarantino I might pop along to my local multiplex…

Nope :p

The first two alien films are great the other two are ok.

Alien 3 was great, when you take into account how much crap went on with the studio ( at one point they were faxing the script to England on the mornings of the days they were due to be shot! ) I thought the overall look and pace of the film were great.

Alien Ressurection was awful! The opening scenes had potential but it all went pear shaped, and the way Sigourney Weaver was re-introduced never worked for me.

I think David Finchers new version of it will be better, its been a few years since i watched Alien 3.I hope his re-edited version is released seperately from the boxset because i don’t want to buy the same DVDs again.

Sorry old bean, better start saving the pennies! Apparently it’s going to be specially cut for inclusion in the Ultimate Legacy box set only, which is a 10 disc set.

I don’t know how limited it will be, these “limited editions” tend to have a habit of being very easy to get hold of!

I’m not sure what the exact extras are, I believe that each film will be represented by a double disc, with two discs dedicated to extra material/ documentaries.

Personally I’m hoping they hurry up and get the extended Bladerunner DVD ready soon!

Ridley Scott was due to start work on it last year, or it may have been the year before that!

Basically there’s a load of scenes that were forced out by the studio, when he went in to re-instate them he found a whole load of other footage that was previously thought to have been destroyed. Because he’s become such a major player in the hollywood stakes recently he’s been given backing to actually shoot some extra scenes that he had to drop when it was originally shot. I can’t remember the exact details as it was ages ago that I read about it, but I believe he’s even going to shoot on ye olde cameras to make sure it blends in seemlessly.

I think the extra footage revolves around how the replicants escaped.

He wasn’t happy with the way it was originally cut. He really didn’t want to do the voice over so he did it as badly as possible in the hope that they’d cut it but they didn’t. There was also the original tacked on happy ending they made with outtakes from The Shining which people were happy to see go in the director’s cut

The thing about Alien 3 is…everyone saw Alien & Aliens, which were BRILLIANT and expected Alien 3 to be the logical procgression and even bigger guns and guts. But the fact that it was a completely different kind of film threw people. I tihnk it’s superb. Beautifulyl shot in places and the acting performances are cool. Sigourney really is very very good in it. Makes oyu cry at times.

It was an awful ending though! The director’s cut is far superior. It’s going to be interesting seeing how this proposed re-edit looks, I can’t really imagine it being enhanced by extra scenes.

Er, no.

Not only is it crap by comparison (although the ‘no weapons’ bit was interesting) but dog-like alien was less convincing.

Also (and I don’t know where you’re posting from) I found it hard to stomach actor Brian Glover playing a convicted lifer in a maximum security jail, when he’s best known in the UK as the voice of the ‘Tetley Tea Folk’!

As for Charles Dance…

See the worst actor ever thread ;)

I thought the dog like alien was an interesting idea. The whole tone of the film was a lot more horrific. I did have problems with the leack of Hicks and the wee girl, and the too-early death of Dance’s character but apart form thsat it was VERy good.

And Charles Dance is a superb actor!

Which is why his re-edited version should be interesting to see, after the studio ripped it apart he almost quit directing altogether as he was so depressed by the way they had treated him. If he’s finally going to get to deliver his vision it could make for interesting viewing.

Alien 3 seemed to have absolutely no direction off screen, Fincher was filming the stuff he wanted and the studio changed it the day they saw the rushes, then ordered him to film it how they wanted it.

I still think it’s a much maligned film, I think that people were expecting more of the same from Aliens.
