Black berries

#

Started by zero nero

I spent today picking black berries…
i’ve got a big bag full of them…how lovely.

Now does anyone out there know how to turn them into alcohol?

Recently I started a new job. As well as the recently reported needle enthusiasts outside our office, there’s also a fruit stal which has been selling blackberries (and raspberries) at £1 for 2 punnets - have eaten loads in hte past few weeks and it’s been wonderful! Blackberries are divine!

I went ahead and added them to a gallon of poitin (irish moonshine) I’ll leave them in it for a month, and hopefully when i strain all the liquid, i should have blackberry schnapps. Should be stronger than vodka, about 50% vol probably, but the blackberries should make it palatable.

If it doesnt kill me, it will make me stronger.

I think you need to add a load of sugar as well. My friend makes sloe gin, and that involves getting a load of sloe berries, cheap gin and sugar then mixing them all up. She also says you have to prick holes in the sloes, but I don’t know if that’s true of all berries.

@Dano - you should try spinach

Re sloe gin - you probably need the sugar to ferment to make alcohol in the first place, but this probably isn’t necessary if you’re starting with moonshine. Same re pricking - sloes have thicker skins than blackberries, so am fairly sure that you don’t need to prick each bobble (is there a word for individual berry bobbles,? Someone should make one up…)although mashing them would help
