Best covers EVER

#

Started by Maykel

Just heard Talk Talk’s “It’s my life” played by No Doubt! It’s the best cover I’ve heard so far; it kicks The Bangles’ “Hazy shade of winter” (Simon/Garfunkel) of the nÂș1 spot!

Runner up’s:
(of course) Therapy? - Diane (Husker du)
Guns ‘n Roses - Sympathy for the Devil (Stones)
Faith No more - Easy (Lionel Richey)

Normally, covers are always cheap tricks to make it to the charts, as everyone knows the song.

So what do you reckon are your best covers EVER?

Most of the covers Jeff Buckley did were exceptional - he totally reworked them until they were almost like his own songs.

The man was a genius

Best cover ever? Has to be…

Failure- Enjoy the Silence (depeche mode)

Some of my other favorites…

The Get Up Kids- Close to You (the cure)
Type O Negative- Summer Breeze (Seals and Crofts)
The Vandels- Dance of the Sugarplumb faries (no clue)
Joe Cocker- She Came in Through the Bathroom Window (the beatles)
God Lives Underwater- Fame (david bowie)
A Perfect Circle- The Nurse Who Loved Me (failure)

Just some of my own fav’s… but that Failure one is by far the most impressive.

Faith No More - War Pigs. Better singer by far, better drummer by far and better guitarist by far. Listen to this and then listen to the original and you’ll piss yourself.

Quicksand - How Soon Is Now? Better than the original and all other covers of this song. They actually managed to make me like a Smiths song :)

Metallica - Turn the Page. Haven’t heard the original, but the cover is fucking brilliant.

Feeder - Can’t Stand Losing You. The guitars are turned up, the production is better and the middle 8 is brilliant.

System Of A Down - Snowblind. Sooooo much better than the
original and very different.

hell is for heroes - Boys Don’t Cry. Like the Cure finally grew some balls.

Every Smiths cover is good…cause its a Smiths song. ;)
Nothing tops the original however.

I really don’t like “It’s my life”…it sounds like Billy Jean now…the original is sooooooo good. Along with the video.

As for cover version…the version you hear first is mostly the best.

Title: Nirvana

I have a live version of Nirvana playing a Velvet Undrground song called - here she comes now, which i think is really nice.
I heard a cover of a Justin Timberlake song by the group The dillinger escape plan, on the Radio1 Rock show a few weeks back, and i must say it kicked ass. I dont know the name of the song but its that one where he sings “i just wanna love you baby” in a way which sounds like someones just kicked him in the nads.
Did you know that “step on” by the happy mondays is a cover of a 70’s song? (dont know who by) , i would say this is my favourite cover song then as i love that song.

Yes, they were fuckin’ awesome.
I think Leatherface are the true masters when it comes to covers:
In The Ghetto (Elvis)
The Ship Song (Nick Cave)
True Colors (Cindy Lauper)
Message In A Bottle (The Police)
and of course…
Hops And Barley (Wat Tyler)

That version kicks ass. Better than the original.

I got some great versions of “Another Brick In The Wall” by
The Step Kings and Class Of 99. But the most hardrocking version is made by Stallhammer - a great industrial band from Austria.

their best are:
Electricity originally by OMD
All of me originally by Billie Holliday
Johnny B. Goode originally by Chuck Berry

Eyelid has done a great cover of Forward To Death by the Dead Kennedys.
Roundhouse I guess covered Wild In The Streets by the Circle Jerks, which also is an amazing cover!

Yeah, that’s right…
By the way: A great cover of Wasted (Black Flag) is made by the legendary german country/punk band Butch Meier.
A live-version can be downloaded at http://www.butchmeier.de/

I’ve not heard it, but surely that can’t improve on the original?

Anyway, I reckon all these are worth a listen:

Guns N Roses - Ain’t It Fun (orig. Rocket From The Tombs)
Senseless Things - Answering Machine (The Replacements)
Johnny Cash - Hurt (Nine Inch Nails)
Redd Kross - Yesterday Once More (The Carpenters)
Seaweed - Go Your Own Way (Fleetwood Mac)
Joyrider - Rush Hour (Jane Wiedlin)
Metallica - Tuesday’s Gone (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
Jimmy Eat World - Firestarter (Prodigy)

And I heartily recommend buying both Guns N Roses’ Spaghetti Incident and Metallica’s Garage Inc - 2 excellent covers albums.

Nirvana were pretty excellent at covers too - Where Did You Sleep Last Night & D7 come to mind.

Therapy? - Denim Demon (easily their best cover I think)

Soundgarden - Waiting For The Sun (this cover got me into The Doors)

I also like GNR’s version of ‘Sympathy For The Devil’, and ‘Message In A Bottle’ by Machine Head
