Moving House

I need your top tips for a troublefree move and also your horror stories to cheer myself up when it all goes pearshaped :D

So far my worst thing has only been to get some sellotape stuck to my already chapped lip - OWWWWWWWWW - and I dismantled the munchkin’s cot today and have apparently put all the screws ‘somewhere safe’, I’m an idiot. Help me.

So Sarah, please take extra care of your Shameless copy when you move your Therapy? collection :p

Ugh, moving, the most horrifying of experiences (other than public diahreah).

These are a few rules I go by when I am moving-

Get as much help as possible… there are never too many movers and helpers.

Make sure all silverware is taped and easy to transport.

Box everything you possibly can BEFORE the day you are moving. I can’t stress enough how awful helping someone move who didn’t even bother to pack.

Do not leave a stack of dirty dishes till the last minute. Another personal experience of a not so swift friend.

Throw out whatever you really don’t want. Moving tends to be a thinning process, and as you move you’ll find there are a whole lot of things you have that defy logical explanation… you don’t know how you got it or why.

Pack a lunch for the moving day so you don’t have to prep any dinners for that night. No one wants to cook after or during moving. Even if you don’t care for fast food or delivery pizza, these are the best options. Also, sub sandwiches make great moving snacks.

These are the best suggestions I have (from the couple of moves I’ve had they’ve made moving… tolerable). Good luck with your move Hooch! :)

Hey we must have the same moving bug. I’m moving in a couple of weeks time. Am trying to be good and get stuff sorted prior but - this is where I beg for sympathy - I’ve got wisdom tooth ache (being pulled tomorrow - arghh), so at the moment my great de-junk plans are on hold.

The only thing I always do is the obvious labeling boxes as to which room they need to go in at the new place. Also give any helpers lots of tea on the day. Oh and don’t do what I did last move and wear a thong - just think of all the heavy boxes you’ll be bending over to pick up - ouch!!!!

You shouldn’t have mentioned that. Now she’ll get rid of her copy of Shameless and keep that Justin Timberlake calendar.

On the other hand, after his Superbowl performance with Janet Jackson I must rank JT much higher. :)

Krisken pretty much covered all the dos and don’ts when it comes to moving. Just make sure you plan well in advance.

Hooray for meeeeeeee!

My move was entirely tolerable :D Thanks guys. Only problem is that I still haven’t sorted any internet access at home and have to use the evil library until I do. Bah.

Anyway, I am sure you will all be thrilled to know that Shameless is safe and sound (and still in a box, heh heh) and that Geraldine bought me a Justin Timberlake calendar as a house warming present which of course has pride of place in my kitchen. I lurve him, and now I can pretend that he lurves me by sticking my photo on it and making kissy noises. Not that I have done or anything :o

Hope you’re all well. I miss you guys but will be back, with awesome broadband powers, in the near future. And I’m still watching you, so behave :p

I’d hide it when I come round, ‘cos I’m liable to draw a large comedy penis on his forehead.

This happened to a friend of mine, he lost 3 boxes of CD’s which mean 300 CD’s while he was moving. The transport company paid a little insurance for them. But I think if the company paid lots of money, it wouldn’t be important because, collection of CD’s, books, LP’s or other stuff cannot be compared with money!

I agree. Plus a lot if it could be rare stuff that’s hard to find, at least at the price you paid originally.

Title: Top tips

Make sure all your family and friends know where you’re moving to, so that they can send you moving in gifts…

Make sure your ex-landlord will give you a decent reference more than 2 days before you move…

Make sure you remember not to leave food in your old place, or your flatmates will grab it (even if it is a boil-in-the-bag cod in parsley sauce)…

And move in with a fit woman (esp one with parents with a big car to help with the shifting of stuff):D

George Foreman grills rule, though they are a pisser to keep clean unless you wash them as soon as you’ve used it. What colour are you getting? Pink! Mine was silver. :D

It’s a grey George Junior, which may sound dull, but it was the one that went best with our shiny kettle and toaster. Do you mean you don’t always clear up straight away? Next you’ll be saying that you don’t fold your socks before putting them in the draw

maintaining a clean, tidy, organised house is a simple procedure of putting things back where they came from. assuming that they are clean after use of course. i have tried to explain this to many people before but, apparently, it’s too difficult. it sounds pretty simple to me. but perhaps that’s because i am a compulsive obsessive tidier of other peoples houses.

Rob, how do you ‘fold’ socks? Luckily I don’t have a sock draw, I have one of those wardrobe hanger Ikea style things so I don’t suppose I have to worry.

Oh yeah, and check me out with MY internet, that works and isn’t a stupid library machine of death. I’m back baby!

Thieves for starters find it tricky, as did my ex-flatmates, especially where kitchen hygiene was concerned - shame they were nice people, otherwise I could hate them properly.

hoochalobster wrote:

Make sure that they’re not balled up on themselves, put one flat on top of the other, fold the pair into thirds and tuck one end around the whole sock - it keeps them flat and together.

Maybe I’m obsessive too, but at least I’ve always got a matching pair.

Don’t think you know what I look like, do you? Best keep it that way! :p
