Master of Puppets

Started by Karl

I am getting on a bit in age now, so I’m not as big a fan of Metallica as I used to be, one of my first gigs was on the damaged justice tour, so that is far back!!
However, I listened to the album MOP yesterday for the first time in ages, shit, that has still got to go down as one of the best albums ever produced. What does everyone else think?

Just read the poll below. Sorry for giving them money!!! I didn’t mind then back in the 90’s, now though can’t remember the last official thing I bought. They really went down in my estimation after money grabbing Lars sue Napster.

Ride The Lighting also belongs to the Hall of Fame of rock classics, dunno which one I like better: RtL or MoP.

Very true mate, I love the way James Hetfields voice sounds on these albums (He doesn’t sing like that anymore, that’ll be the ciggares :)) and the thrash speed metal riffs give me chills. Bloody brilliant albums. I heard ST Anger the other day though and have to say I was very disapointed.

Me too…
I think all the first four are amazing!
But production-wise…i think they all suck.
When they *finally* got the sound right they forgotten to write good songs (black album) :D
I think Ride The Lightning is my fave.

Production-wise…Slayer’s - Reign In Blood still blows a lot of records away.
That guitar sound is amazingly brutal…:D
Later on the same with Burn My Eyes and Vulgar Display Of Power…rargh.

The production on …And Justice For All is my least fav. You can hardly hear Jason. I love the playing on it though. And it’s my fav Metallica album when it comes to drums. I hate Lars’ playing, but it’s a little more bearable to me on …And Justice For All.

Reign In Blood is sooooo good, and because it’s so short I can listen to it twice on the way to work :)

Vulgar Display… that is another brilliant album.. love the production on this one, Dimebag Darrell’s guitar is just awesome. Songs are briliant too ;)

I think Master Of Puppets is brilliant and one of the best albums by any band, ever. I also think it’s good that Sarah is moving house this week and doesn’t have much time to visit the boards.

I think master of puppets has the slight edge over ride the lightning as even though some of the songs on ride are better - there are no shit ones like ‘escape’ or ‘trapped under ice’ to break it up.

I must admit, I never really liked The Thing That Should Not Be, that much until I saw them perform it live, and the effects on James’s voice live, is fantastic. The whole album of MoP in my opinion beats any other Metallica album. I like all the albums pre black. Jason got a rough ride, and is a fantastic bassist, fantastic live, but I just think that his how Lars and Co write. Your the new boy, stay out of it

I agree Karl. Definitely. Jason got such a rough time. I remember hearing about all these stories, like they’d go out to dinner together as a band and then everyone else would run out just as the bill came, just to let Jason pay for it all. Plus he never had the creative freedom Cliff had. If you look at the credits to the albums with Cliff and the albums with Jason, the ones with Cliff had more of an band input, whereas after it was all Ulrich/Hetfield.

I really enjoyed S&M, as the songs from the earlier albums sounded great with an orchestra to them, and it also introduced me to fuel and memory remains, which I also enjoyed as I’m not bothered about buying Load and Reload.
I will definately have to save up to buy the DVD, as the coffers are low at the moment, as I bought Live Shit Binge and Purge on DVD at Christmas, that is really good and got it for £36 from HMV

I liked S&M as well i thought it was interesting, some bands release unplugged sets and Metallica went in the opposite direction by getting an orchestra,I read in last months Q that Michael Kamen died of a heart attack in London on 18th November 2003.

“Here I Am Motherfucker” :D *quoting mr AJ Cairns*

To briefly summarize my opinion here: Kill, Ride, Master and Justice are all fucking brilliant albums. The black album was still ok, Load and Reload were complete shit (except for Fuel),Garage Inc is fucking great just for the Mercyful Fate medley alone, S&M is no real album in my opinion and I simply LOVE St Anger… the (drum) sound on the CD sucks, but hearing the album live makes up for that.

There you go, let all you Metallica haters slaughter me now I don’t give a fuck :p

I always kinda liked Load and Reload - if there had been some quality control there could have been one really good albums worth of material instead of 2 ok’ish ones.

Maybe if its for sale for a dollar…just to keep the series complete :D
Load has maybe 2 or 3 good songs.
But even Trapped Under Ice crushes them. :D
