‘Early’ versions vs ‘final’ versions

#

Started by Michael

So, I was wondering what your opinions are regarding the fact that some early versions or demos sound better than the eventual ‘final’ result. I am listening to Kiss Me On The Ghost Train right now, and can’t help thinking that this version is better the Last Blast which it became in the end. Same applies to The Sweeney, I love that song!! Then there’s the early version of Me vs You, and the early version of This One’s For You. Anyway, those are just a few examples, and mind you, those are all personal opinions! Anyone agrees with me?

Yeah, the early version of “Me Vs You” kicked loads of arse. The early version of “Joey”, called “New Song In D” back in 1996, was fantastic…the finished version on Shameless is very average.

I loved “The Sweeney” too - but I don’t think they finished this did they? If so, what did it become? There’s not really another Therapy? song that sounds like it.

But, then again, have you heard the early version of “Misery”? That was absolutely horrible!! :p:

I can definatly agree as far as ‘me vs. you’ and ‘this one’s for you’ are concernded, though by no means the final versions are bad: ‘tofy’is my favourite track off shameless, and ‘me vs. you’ is a great song too, ‘though it’s overproduced that much.

I dont’t know about the other early versions, but the end of ‘the sweeney’ sounds quite like ‘lunacy booth’, or is it just me?

“New Song In D” is really great, much better than the final version.
I like “If It Kills Me” (demo) and old versions played with Keith on drums.

To me it’s the other way round. I like the versions that are made after the definitive versions like the new recording of Diane.

Don’t forget the “LONELY, CRYIN’ ONLY” b-sides…

I know they were probably only meant as a bit of fun by the line-up at the time, but great remakes all the same.

The new recordings of SKYWARD, TEETHGRINDER, and DISGRACELANDS were good, but the originals are best.

I particularly like the new recording of DIANE though. It kicks ass. I much prefer it to the cello version.

agreed, ‘though I like the version of ‘diane’ best which they played live around 2000. Just two distorted guitars, instead of the cello and ass-kicking as fuck. just sheer class.

If I’m not mistaking, the early version was called Your Disease and it rocked a hell lot more than what showed up on Infernal Love…

But Me vs You is not a bad song by any means, it’s quite good actually!
Anyone remembers the version of It It Kills Me that was played at the summer festivals in 2002? There’s a version from Marktrock in Leuven, which was even better than the version on HA. I just think there’s even more power and energy behind in that version. On the other hand, the final version of Hey Satan You Rock is way better and more powerful than the version they played at the summer festivals in 2002.

Don’t know the early version of ‘HSYR’, but I also thought the early ‘IIKM’ was better, just because it was faster. ‘though neils drumming is way better then keiths’. actually when I first saw the video before high anxiety was released I thought: ‘oh shit, how did they manage to fuck the song up like this?’ but after hearing the final version the second time it was okay, and in fact it’s my favourite song off HA by now.

If It Kills Me sounded really great in 2002, but I must say I prefer Neils drumming now… but nevertheless I love both versions ;)

But I definately prefer the HA version of Hey Satan You Rock.

Why don’t you try uploading it to this thread?
Then we could all have a lash off it.

What Me VS You is concerned, it contains a classic piece of evidence of how a classic great guitarsolo should sound like.

Been listening to “The Sweeney” a lot lately. If it did end up on ‘Semi Detached’ in some form or another, it most probably turned into “Heavens Gate” - there are some slight similarities. Although, “The Sweeney” kicks “Heaven Gate”s arse every time.
