An unfair question, like: which country shouldn’t be in Europe, Belgium or Austria.

They’re both two of my all-time faves.
I think I’ll go for The Pixies, they’ve been around before Nirvana, are around yet again and have produced so many lovely other spin-offs like The Breeders or all of Frank Black’s projects… and finally have one of THE most beautiful songs ever with Gigantic.

Anyone who chooses for Nirvana isn’t aware that without The Pixies and Killing Joke, Nirvana wouldn’t have gotten a record deal because without those 2 bands, Nirvana would have been an ordinary garage-band and now they have blended the right influences into a fresh new genre (fresh in 1990 that is).

Respect to both of them

Nirvana did take what the Pixies started and make it into something great… so I’m gonna go for them, even though I love the Pixies - when i was 12/13 Nirvana were the most important band in the world to me!

for myself don’t know for sure, at the moment it’s the pixies, but from time to time i’ve got a nirvana period and then I forget about the pixies a little bit. :P

Title: Nirrvana

I understand kurt cobain saw the pixies as a big influence but i could never really get into them - i love the song “Gigantic”, but thats about it , but i understand the band’s appeal.
I think Nirvana had so many simple but intense songs and thats why i can always listen to them. i think their best songs are - drain you, aneurysm, big cheese , paper cuts, stay away, polly, blew, mexican seafood - but hey this is a T? message board , so i won’t go overboard.

boy is this a hard one. Well maybe for many people but not me. As much as I like the Pixies, Nirvana made In Utero, and I honestly believe there has never been a finer moment in music! ‘Heart Shaped Box’ and ‘Milk It’ inparticular still blow me away.

I think the only other album i’ve got such as passion for is Helmet - Meantime. Which comes in a close 2nd.

It is a really difficult call, but I’d have to go for the Pixies, I think. ‘Where is my mind’ is so cool, but so simple (ditto for many other songs from both bands, of course, but there you go)

And special mention to Debaser as well. :)

I wonder how tarnished Nirvana’s legacy would’ve been if Kurt hadn’t died so early? Think about it - Pearl Jam definitely developed towards a more unpopular sound. In fact, in my opinion anything past their 1st album sucks.

Hey ‘VS’ is way better. As far as a classic album from Pearl Jam go, I don’t think they have one cos every album has fillers in it, but I reckon ‘No Code’ was definately the closest it got, I love ‘Red Mosquito’ thats a classy tune..

Nirvana sounds better and are more commercial. But the Pixies set the groundwork. They had an effect similiar to Bob Dylan. It sometimes takes a cover of one of their songs for you to realize how great their songwriting is. (Weezers Velouria, Get Up Kids Alec Eiffel, or Popa Roach’s version of Gouge Away). Also their sound is much more diverse and experimental.

As for the Pearl Jam comment that anything after thier 1st album sucks…take a listen to Lukin off of No Code ; Do the Evolution off Yield; or Save You off of Riot Act. They can still jam (no pun intended) as well as anyone. But their sound has mellowed a bit. I think a lot of that has to do with Eddie’s voice being a shell of what it once was.

Pick up the bootleg of their concert in Atlanta in 1994. It was for a radio broadcast, and very common on E-Bay. One listen and you will immediately change you mind. It is one of the greatest shows you will ever hear from anyone. Listen especially to Blood. You’d be amazed that Eddie could speak for a week after that. Powerful! Plus they do the best version of Sonic Reducer you’ll ever hear
