I think that could have a little to do with it, but Fender does make Strats and Tele’s with humbuckers.

But anyone’s who’d played both can tell there is a completely different feel to each, let alone the sound.

I think it’s a combo of both sound and playability.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, I agree there’s a clear difference between them, even ignoring the pickups. But I’m just curious to know how important the singlecoil/humbucker distinction is to people when they consider. Let me put it this way: Hands up all those people who voted Gibson but prefer Singlecoil.
Or voted Fender but prefer Humbuckers.

(And for the record, as far as guitars are concerned, I prefer both Gibson and humbuckers. I’ve had less chance to compare basses, so I’m not too sure on that score)

I like the feel of the fender neck. The gibson necks feel a bit flat and not quite as comfortable to play.

However, I am Mr BananaHands himself, which may have some bearing on things.

For me the necks on my Gibsons are much more comfortable than my Strat. I had a Tele as well and had issues with playing F chord when I was standing up. The way the guitar hung on the strap, the neck angle was far away from my body so I had to stretch for the F.

I don’t have that issue with my strat. My SG sits about center and I don’t have any issues playing. But my Les Paul is so comfortable to play standing-up (impossible sitting down though). The body hangs low and to the side a bit leaving the whole neck center with my body, so you don’t have to reach for any frets and you can really use the guitars weight when doing some vibrato.

Due to the huge difference in comfort, Gibson’s my favorite.

BUT, (and I guess this goes to the single vs humbucker), NOTHING sounds better than a strat on the bridge pickups played on a tube amp through a UNI-Vibe. Think Yellow Ledbetter. It’s so sweet.

I’ve really only ever used the Gison neck-spacing, so when I play Fenders, I keep hitting wrong notes (not watching what I’m doing!). I just bought a DiMarzio humbucker and I’m going to put it in the bridge pick-up og my brother’s unused Squire Strat and Keep it in C tuning, just because downtuning that low with a set of .10s is really irritating.

has anyone played one of those Custom Tele’s?

It a Tele with a neck through body, the back is more contoured, and it has a pair of DiMarzio humbuckers.

It looks sweet. I’m curous how they are.

feck gibson and fender, save up your pocket money and get ESP to build you what you want. i know it costs allot of $$$ but you’ll end up with a guitar that you’ll never want to replace.
why have several guitars that you ‘like’ when you can have something unique that blows everything else to hell?

just my opinion!!!

I’ve played a few ESPs (when I could find them, usually all you can find are the LTDs, the Kirk Hammet model was okay but I didn’t like the ESP pickups on it. Too much high end, great for metal but if you want to play anything other than power chords I was disappointed).

I just added a new Gibson to the collection (my 3rd), thank you tax refund! It’s a gibson SG Classic with P90 pickups. I sat down with it and by the time I took a break it was 2 hours later. It’s super comfortable like a normal SG, but because of the P-90 pickups (they are single coils but are the size of a humbucker), it has a very distinct sound. The G has a bit of a twnag like a Telecaster, but you get more subtle crunch out of the neck pickup.

If anyone has heard Pearl Jam live over their last few tours, and noticed Eddie Vedders guitar has an unusual ring to it, that’s what he’s playing. An SG Classic with using the bridge pickup and really only using the clean channel of a tube amp with the gain all the way up. Once my Marshall’s tubes heated up I was able to get the same sound and it’s pretty sweet.

When you fire up the bridge pickup with some heavy distortion it has a much warmer tone than my Faded SG and Les Paul.

If anyone gets a chance to play one, I recommend it.

when it comes to fender necks vs gibson necks, it’s all about playing style which you prefer. do you keep your thumb behind or wrap it around (or both which is my technique). do you have big or small fingers? are they fat or thin? only way to discern which you prefer is to play a lot on both. even fender and gibson necks though are different depending on which models you are trying. the profiles differ according to who the guitar was designed for.

Has anyone ever played one of the Eric Clapton model strats?

I tried one at a shop once, and hated it because of the neck. The neck had this wierd sort of trapezodial shape. Really tough to get your hands around (sort of illustrates tgEs point).

If you see one in a shop check it out, it feals really wierd. Clapton must have some long lanky fingers.

i have got an epiphone les paul model, and it’s a damn good guitar for a very good price!
i also like fender guitars, and specially the telecaster models! i am saving some money to buy one, because i think they have a great sound!
of course i also like the gibson guitars, but i think they are pretty expensive when you compare them to fender or epiphone…
when i look at the price/quality, then i like epiphone more then gibson
but when i become a filthy, rich millionaire, then i’ll buy a gibson :D

maybe that’s the reason why they call him ‘slow hands’ :D
