AAAArgh, you’re just teasing me, now!

I don’t get to see Motorhead ‘til next Thursday!!

This’ll be the first time I’ve caught them live, so TELL ME MORE?!

What are they playing these days?

What was the sound like?

Is Mikkey Dee fucking mental or what?!

1)Mostly old stuff, but expect ‘All in the name of Tradgedy’ and some other new ones.
2)F***king metal, but the Ulster Hall is quieter than a cautious church mouse under heavy sedation, in a woods with no one around to hear it, so that was disappointing. Also, their PA system has NO treble whatsoever. But that’s the venue’s fault.
3)Hell yeah. And he’ll probably do a drum solo.

All in all, the Ulster Hall sucks, but the band more than make up for it. It should be good. Really good.

At the risk of being controversial - as usual - I have to say Motorhead was the worst gig I’ve ever been to. This was around 10 years ago. It was so loud you couldn’t hear it. Could’ve been Lemmy, could’ve been anyone. My ears took two days to recover.

I know I sound old. Probably what your granny would say. But I would never say this about any other band I’ve ever seen; I love live music. And I love Motorhead. But never again…

PS: Lemmy’s ears must be shot!

I saw them for the first time at Graspop Metal Meeting a few months ago, they blew me away. That’s why we’ll go to the Dublin gig as well. And maybe we’ll also go to see them in Brussels in November (if if would depend on me, we’ll go for sure!!!)

Actually I agree that the sound at a Motorhead gig is usually very poor..Most of the time you can hear the drums more than anything else, Lemmy’s voice is lost in the mix a lot and Phil’s guitar is impossible to pick out for most of the show. They have made the mistake of substituting “loud” for “clear” when it comes to sound. If they want it that loud on stage, fine, knock yourself out lads! But, it should be better mixed out front, and when you see the guys who do the sound for them have been with them for the best part of 30 years, it’s no bloody wonder the sound is so bad - the sound men are fucking deaf!

I wear ear plugs or Attenuators to gigs (a habit from being a sound man on the road for years!)so i can hear things just fine.. so both the Motorhead gigs i have been to the sound was quite good. The headlining show of theirs was really fucking good… they played most of the songs you wanted to hear and they are Motorhead..what more could you want. Also when i saw them at hydepark they were the best band on blowing away foo fighters and even QOTSA which surprised me!

Hmmmmm I try sticking my fingers in my ears at some point during every gig I go to and it does indeed improve the sound a hell of a lot, so I think I may follow your lead on the old ear-defenders front.

Foam Ear plugs will knock a bit of the top end off so the sound is a bit more bassy. Attenuators are the ones you really want, they cost a bit as you have to have them moulded but they turn down all the frequecys equally so it’s just like the gig is at a more normal and none ear damaging level, you also don’t feel like your missing the power as well…you can get them in 15, 25 or 50 db. Just so you know:)

Do you have a link or any idea where to get them and how much etc?

They could be very useful for me with my own gigs, as I am convinced my drummer’s cymbals are fucking up my left ear (as I am so close to them during a gig). He just bought some new hi-hats that are heavy as fuck (could barely hold them in one hand they are that heavy) and they are DAMN loud! :D

I will ask a friend and let you know… i got mine done when i was 17 at some place down in Brighton and they cost about £40 and that included hearing test, moulding and the ear plugs. My friend had them done in some place in London…i will ask him. Motorbike or industrial workers get them fitted as well… so there must be plenty of places that do them.
I will try and find some links.

These aren’t the moulded ones, but I’ve heard (excuse the pun) that they’re pretty good. I expect they’ll do well as a stop gap until you manage to get yourself the moulded ones, if that’s what you’re after.
Here’s their website:
http://www.etymotic.com/
Looks like they do the full range.

The thing I don’t like about those ones for a tenner are the huge handlebars you’ll apparently get out of the side of your head, but I guess given the choice between that or going deaf…

I’d probably lose those expensive ones in no time… so I’ll stay with the cheap ones… the problem is though that I forget to take them along to concerts most of the time
They should be for sale in every venue, ear damage is no pleasure at all…
When I’m in a place where people are talking I can’t recognise the backgroundmusic anymore… very annoying if someone is asking you about the backgroundmusic: “what’s this band called again?” :o

So kids (and everyone with good ears)… protect your ears while you still can!!!!

I keep a pair of spare earplugs in my wallet, so most of the time i have a pair on me. Looking after your ears is a good thing, i love the getting up the next morning and not having a ringing in them… but i have to be careful anyway as they are my livlyhood really and i have them insured (the ears not the ear plugs:p).

Might get some earplugs as well for their gig in Dublin with Therapy?
As the gig is now moved to the smaller Olympia , the sound will be even more overwhelming.

On another note , have a fashion dilemma for that night since yesterday.
Was always gonna wear the Therapy? shirt but the missus now brought me a Motorhead shirt back from Portugal…

Gonna be a striptease/shirt-change halfway down probably.

Do you really? It makes sense, I suppose.
I wonder if I should insure my keen intellect and boyish charm?

*is rejected by insurers across the land*
