Guitars - Need Your Help!

#

Started by andys gibson sg (James Harris)

I’m debating on which to purchase… either a Gibson Melody Maker or a Epiphone Les Paul Custom.

Which would you guys go for?

Pictures of the guitars should be attached for all to take a peek at.

That’s a tricky one. Are those the actual guitars? I don’t much like that off-white colouring.

I just need honest opinions. Not “they’re both caca” type of feedback.

Well, I’ve never played either, so I can’t offer you such ‘constructive’ criticism, as that. the melody maker looks very nice (purely on looks), but I’d want to play them before I bought either.

I’ve played both and like both. But its hard to choose. The epiphone looks very versertile as where the Gibson seems limited with just one P-90 pickup. But I don’t know… :(

Oh, is the melody maker the white(ish) one? the attachment names changed and I’m confused, now. BuT i like the black one with what I take to be a p90. Does the epihphone just _look_ versatile? I mean you can get a lot out of a p90, and some guitars have plenty of dials but with little effect from twiddling. So to speak…

The cream looking guitar is the Epiphone, and the black is the Melody Maker. And yep thats the P-90 pickup.

I play mostly hard rock, punk stuff. But I’m stuck for choice, which would suit me most.

Okay, I think I’m back on track now ;) Is this a replacement guitar? If not, what else do you play? I sympathise, I don’t really play guitar anymore, but if I were to get a new guitar, I know I’d wnat to go for either an SG or something with a p90. I know that doesn’t help :D

A Gibson will inevitably be of better quality than an epiphone, from what I’ve played. I think its really just down to how uch money you want to spend.

For versitility, sound, looks, style, value, money back(for future) and play I strongly advise the epiphone custom sg.Its actually been said that some epiphones play better than the gibsons. I’m a big fan of sg’s and this one is shit hot dude. Not to mention it’s pretty much a copy of that beauty that Mr Cairns himself uses. The melody maker has less pick up selection, and in my opinion may limit what you can do.Making it more likey to become boring in the future.Afriend of mine was going to buy a 7string Ibanez, but realised soon after that gimicky things on guitars tend to wear off.Although the melody maker can sound pretty cool, I dont think it could be used as the main guitar, maybe as something for a different sound on a couple of tracks.
Hope that helps man…good luck

I’ve heard that, too, but I don’t have any experience of it being true. Err… which isn’t to say it’s false…

Well I’m told the epiphone won’t have the same ‘punch’ as the melodymaker.

And Gibson’s are more reliable right…?

But saying that the bassist in The Donnas still uses a epiphone.

Well, actually, my freind’s Epiphone SG (its the Goth series one)- although playing CRAP, is still going strong. The input on my Gibson Voodoo V, however, is loose, and has resulted in complete lack of sound and a trip back to the shop for repairs inside 6 months of purchase. Maybe that’s just an isolated case, but more importantly, it feels and sounds incredible. In fairness, I’m not too familar with the actual models that you have to choose from, though.

I’ve got an Epiphone Les Paul Custom w/EMG dual humbucking pickups in it. Very rich trebly tone, the guitar is heavy as hell we think it’s made of ash perhaps.

If you buy the epiphone -definately- replace the pickups. They’re not bad guitars but the electronics leave a lot to be desired.

Only after browsing ebay.co.uk have I realised how expensive gear is back home, here I just picked up an ‘03 Gibson SG Special (natural cherry finish) for $910 Canadian (£380 GBP) maybe I should broker guitar purchases over here :P

hmmm…the way I see it, you got one kick-ass pup on the Melody Maker (P90)

or three average pups on the Epiphone.

I’d go for the MM to be honest…might not have the looks, but the sound should be very good…playability is always solved with a good setup ;)

having said all that, if you really want an SG, try and save up the extra cash and get a used Gibson SG special…or one of the faded ones with the P90s…you’ll get good pups and hardware, alongside the cool SG shape :)

good luck with whichever you decide to go with
