For some reason, all Epi’s I’ve tried have been like some sort of toys in my opinion, maybe just bad examples. I know there are also good Epiphones, Elitist-series for example, but their price is also higher.

For Squier, for years I disliked them for having tried some of the early 90’s stratos. But then I tried a new Squier P-Bass Special (P-body, J-neck and PJ-mics), and I just had to buy it, since it was cheap, it had all the features I need for a bass, and its playability is excellent.

For both manufacturers, there are good and bad instruments, so better try what suits you best, and to make sure you get the good one. Unfortunately, both of them quite certainly need new microphones, the originals are pretty lame. But that’s the problem with most budget-priced guitars. I’d say there probably are better guitars in the same price range, the name of the ‘big brother’ in both cases does quarantee some sort of quality, but also raises the price.

Ugh…Unless you are specifically going for the classic Gibson or Fender guitar styles, I’d say check out some of the Ibanez and Jackson guitars. They have some decent guitars at reasonable prices.

If you can save up a bit longer, you may just want to go for gibson’s faded SG. I’ve got one and it’s great. When I bought it, at the store I kept switching between in and the SG special (which is the faded with a finished paint job) to see where the extra $300 went besides the paint job. I actually liked the faded better, it had a slightly brighter tone, but as for everything else they are identical.

Have to agree about the Squiers…

I have an old (16 years..gulp, has it REALLY been that long…?!) Squier Strat, which doesn’t compare too unfavourably with the Fenders I have seen (although of course it ain’t as good). My brother, on the other hand, got a Squier Strat several years later, and it really is just a cheap and nasty guitar. Very lightweight, where mine at least felt vaguely substantial, very thin sounding. Yeuch.

On the other hand, he has a relatively recent Epiphone SG, which I can get all my fave AC/DC / Sabbath / Therapy? sounds from with little effort, and which is rather impressive for the money it cost him.

Personally, I’ll stick with my Gibson and my Fender, neither of which I could begin to afford if they went up in smoke tomorrow, but both of which are fuckin great.

I agree, once you get a higher end guitar, everything else just doesn’t sound nearly as good. Which can suck in a way if you’re short of cash and need a second axe.

I played a Westfeild SG the other day, and despite being significantly cheaper, it blew the Epiphone right out of the water. You’re better off getting entry level guitars that were made to be guitars instead of crap copys of guitars. Entry level Jacksons and Ibanez guitars are far superior to the Epiphone or Squier ones, especially if you’re willing to shell out a little bit more.
