Vocals on NANE

#

Started by mooneycult

I’ve finally figured out what is bugging me about the new record…

I still find Andys slightly off key vocals on This Ship is Sinking and Long Distance a little irritating, but what bothers me more is that on many songs (Monkeys, Heaven, Sermon) Andys vocals sound buried in the background, like the mic was on the other side of a door or something when they were recording.

I dunno, I know the album is supposed to be raw but I still find this annoying. Maybe I was spolied by the crystal clear porduction of HA - easily the best produced T? album IMO.

Thoughts?

I think Long Distance is sung brilliantly, very fragile. In the other songs the vocals are bit burried indeed; the voice is more an instrument. I like that.

I hear what you are saying…but I think that approach worked better on Babyteeth and Suicide pact, mainly because I think at the heart of NANE is a pop record struggling to get out.

don’t worry, you’re just the unfortunate and unknowing victim of being accustomed to auto-tuned vocals. Many people are these days and when they hear something real, especially live performances, and records where everything isn’t fixed and quantized to perfection they find it irritating. It’s a horrible condition but you can do a few things to remedy this! Scream at artists to record on to 2” tape, and to throw their computers out the window. Computers have brought us many bonuses, but they’ve brought us pop stars who can’t sing a damn note (Ashlee Simpson, etc..) My favourite albums are those with as many natural circumstances as possible (noise, feedback, off notes) while still packing excellent songs.

I agree with this to a degree I’m a Pro tools engineer now but I used to work on reel to reel. But digital editing is a god send for the fact that it’s none destructive and you can’t recorded over or chew up your tape and i’m happy never to splice again. But on the other hand you you can really fix most things and get a good shine on polishing a turd. But things recorded in pro tools do lose the warmth and it doesn’t sound as nice as tape so I record to a computer then the chosen takes put to multi track tape or mix to tape to get the warmth.
But people should get to the habit of its the performance thats counts not that you can fix it afterwards that just takes the life out of it.

I admit I know little enough about auto tuned vocals etc, but if anything Andys voice sounds likes its being synthesized on tracks like Save the Sermon and Last One to Heavens a Loser. It doesn’t sound natural to me.

But if auto tuned vocals means the album sounds better - that’s ok by me.

Auto tuned means that you can sing off notes (or even false) and the computer authomatically corrects it. In other words: you don’t need to be a good singer anymore to make a good recording. I agree totally with aidan on this. I want real music and not music that has been tampered with. This off course is something completely different than using computers and/or digital recording systems to record and edit.

This made our demo sound so PHAT…We asked him to make it sound like Volume 3( slipknot)…and he did ! I am so proud of our demo !!

I’d agree, I think Andy’s voice is pretty versatile and he uses it well on NANE - more so than HA. Long Distance is Therapy? in full lovely mood in a way that they’ve not been since The Boy’s Asleep.

When my band recorded our EP, we did it on reel-to-reel, then mixed it with a pro-tools style computer program. It sounds fucking fantastic! Analogue is the way to go.

Auto tunning really sucks in my opion I have had people before who wanted me to retune them which i just thought was lazy of them. Also i can never be bothered to go thougth the whole thing of finding out what scale they are playing in and key and then sorting out what notes are right or wrong, the person could have sang it better by that time!
But i do like the Valve driven desk into pro tools that would make a fat sound. (i’m sounding such a geek)
I think if i come back home to oxford I will sort out my own studio, then i can work with the people that i want to work with. (I don’t know why i’m teling you all this, i think it’s jsu been a long day)
