It’s not that easy..
You have to wait a few days (not sure of the exact amount of time..it varies by state) for a background check… If you buy it legally that is.
But that doesn’t mean that a nut with a clean record would be prevented from getting one.
Of course anyone, anywhere can get a gun illegally if they really want one. Not just in the US.

I think its something like around 15 days you have to wait to get a handgun but you can just walk into a shop and buy a rifle there and then.

I wouldn’t be surprised. But if security let a guy carrying a 30-06 into a club, there’s more than one issue going on here.
We’re talking a handgun in this case, which does require a waiting period. But, I do know some states, including Virgina, where I live, have a “Gun Show” loophole, which need to be closed up.
But again if you have a clean criminal record, nothing can stop you.
Who knows what it’s going to take to tighten up gun rules here. And now ,with Terrorism on top of the normal everyday criminals, which scare the hell of people, the gun lobby is stronger than ever because millions think they need a gun to protect themselves since the gov’t does such a crap of job.
Sad state of affairs…what can I say :(

So far, I don’t think they’ve said anything about whether he bought the gun recently or not. He was a former Marine for 2 years, so it’s possible he had training and a gun of his own before that time, possibly before he developed his mental problem.
No, the gun control issue here in the U.S. isn’t perfect and it’s probably never going to change, but what country is perfect?

Technically they didn’t use guns. They used box cutters.
But if they are in the country, have immigration papers, and a clean record. Yes they can buy a gun.
The sick thing is, that’s exactly the argument the gun nuts put out there..”They (crooks/terrorists) have guns..so we need them to protect ourselves”
And it works. Plus the right to bear arms is in the Constitution so it’s tough to mess with. It would take a 2/3rds vote from both houses of congress and every state to get it changed.
It all goes back to the Brits! If they didn’t go shooting up Concorde, people wouldn’t have been so paranoid in the first place so as to include it in the bill of rights…just joking.
