My girlfriend recently told me that all T? fans are miserable due to the lyrical content and musical style of the songs. Can you prove her wrong and list as many T? songs as you can that you think are ‘happy’ or that are not miserable.

Thanks

‘If there’s one thing that I should remember, there is a light at the end of the tunnel…’ (30 Seconds). Can’t be more positive than this. But also a song like Safe (‘I’m clean and I’m clinging, like I never held on to anything in my life’) contains some positive parts. It’s not all Misery (!).

Your girlfriend is wrong in that most Therapy? fans are miserable without the aid of music. At least that’s how it is in my case!

Uhm, lets see… Is there a serious band you know of that has songs about being happy all the time? A lot of music deals with all kinds of problems. Anyway I think it’s kinda radical to say that all T? fans feel miserable just because they listen to T? I mean why would they then? Do all The Cure fans put on make-up, or love it to get lost in a forest?

maybe Opal Mantra :-)

Sister, definitely.

The Boy’s Asleep.

You Are My Sunshine :-)))

maybe.

but that’s just lyrics. we don’t listen to the songs to depress us. we listen to them to cheer us up. which they do.

Well,I think that most songs in Troublegum sound happy even though they talk about unpleasant situations. If you just read the lyrics of Nowhere or Unrequited, then indeed these songs will sound miserable.Just make your girlfriend listen to them.

I think that Therapy’s music actually is uplifting. If I’m really down it definelty doesn’t help to listen to ‘happy’ music with nonsens lycrics. I for one feel much better when i listen to Therapy?:s lyrics for instance, because sometimes they sing exactly how I feel, and it really helps to know that someone else has felt the same way as you do.

Just take your girlfriend to a T? gig. Then she’ll see just how miserable us Therapy? fans are. The lads have such a good time on stage, and the crowd is so into the show and having a damn good time, that I think your girlfriend would be the only miserable person there (cos she is obviously very sad !!!!).

My boyfriend says, I’d be better off dead’.

I find T? stuff to be more realistic in its lyrics compared to some of that shit that gets into the charts, which gives the impression that life is good and happy always, which it isn’t at all. Therapy mix happy and miserable stuff and it gives a much more realistic outlook on life.

Therapy? lyrics are miserable from the core.
I do sence a great amount of black humour and a way of looking at
things not to serious, although they probably are.
It must be an ‘Irish’ mentality. Drink it away and laugh at it.
But their lyrics are not ‘happy’ in a normal sence of way.
The music has a uplifting form of tone, so the contrast of the total package is blurring.

yes… a great man once told me that death is always smiling in your face, and all you can do is smile back. I dont find Babyteeth or Pleasure Death depressing at all, they’re just really rockin records, more about frustration than anything else really. i think.

Most music is about sad stuff because it’s a million times easier to write a sad song than it is to write a happy one. And, in general, more people can relate to sad songs. I mean, it’s hard to relate to a song who’s lyrics are ‘if you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands’. I don’t understand your girlfriend anyway. Are Therapy? fans a special breed of people who don’t like ANY other band, don’t listen to ANY other music and are basically sad. they’re not.

Well, I don’t agree with Barbie, that a sad song is easier to write. It must be a lot easier to write ‘life is a flower, tralala’ than to really give away what you’re thinking.

I meant that it’s just generally easier to write a sad song. Because you feel more inspired when you’re feeling sad, the song means more to you, more people can relate to it and the song would probably be more successful in the long run. On the other hand, if you wrote a good tune, it would probably be quite succesful regardless of the lyrics. If you try to write a song, it’s actually a lot easier to make it sad, if you write happy lyrics it sounds like a nursery rhyme at best, and at worst, like an S Club 7 song! (i have nothing against S Club 7, I just dislike their music).

White Psycho wrote:

I have plenty against S Club 7. They are a prime example of a manufactured group singing shitty songs that say pretty much the same thing with each song(baby I love you, can’t live without you etc.) Therapy? should add them to their ‘Get a gun on New Year’s Eve and kill some pop groups’ list.

surprises me they have a list like that. This is an everlasting discussion about making money with music being right or wrong. Some people can get really obsessed by hating bands or things, why bother? If you don’t like someone or something, fuck em.
