I’ve been cutting down heavily recently. Only smoking when I’m drinking heavily, so not smoking when I’m having just a wee biertje or something.

And I’m cutting down the boozing a lot too.

For me, it will be 7 weeks without any alcohol on Saturday.

The longer I go without alcohol the easier it is, and the less I miss it again - I have never intended to give up drinking altogether, but at the moment I am quite happy without.

7 weeks probably doesn’t sound like a lot to some people but for me drinking has been a big part of life for the past 10 - 12 years.

I have been out to a few gigs and for a couple of meals with friends… that kinda sucks because there is little alternative to drinking alcohol when out - I have had pints of coke but it is watered down to fuck, but I drove to those so wouldnt have been able to drink anyway.

On the plus side - I feel fantastic. I dont wake up feeling like shit and I am now a firm believer in healthy body = healthy mind. I have been doing about 10 miles a day on the excersise bike and I have been lifting weights. Plus I am eating a lot less and what I do eat has been a lot healthier.

I just fancied a change so with a bit of willpower - I have been good up to now. I gave up a lot of my other ‘bad habits’ just after Christmas - I think it would be pretty stupid to say I am never gonna drink again but with the way I feel at the moment I know I have made a permenant lifestyle change for the better :D

Good luck mate!

Nice one, inspirational indeed. Haven’t indulged in ‘bad habits’ ;) for a month, stopped smoking last week, and shall try and stop drinking, for the time being at least.

Just have to find stuff to keep me occupied because when I did my five-weeker I found that time passed sooooooooooo slowly!

Yeah - I kinda know what you mean - I have pretty much been a recluse for the past few weeks as well - which is one of the downsides, but once I feel I have got on top of it then I guess that will change.

If you were to have told me I would have wrote that message 3 months ago I would have laughed my arse off… but I guess things can change!

Man, are you nuts? I’m referring to Gav, of course. ;)

Seriously, it’s easier to stay ‘clean’ if you really stand behind your decision and not just do it because you feel something has got to change. It definitely helps if your friends appreciate your sober style and not tease you with offering drinks or fags.

Do you want a beer? :p

Bernard: Well, to be honest, after years of smoking and drinking, you do sometimes look at yourself and think…
Fran nods knowingly: Yep…
Bernard: You know, just sometimes, in between the first cigarette with coffee in the morning to that four hundredth glass of cornershop piss at 3am, you do sometimes look at yourself and think…
Fran: Yep…
Bernard: … “this is fantastic! I’m in heaven!”

Cool maybe we can get through this together after christmas my doctor told me not to drink for a while coz i have damged my liver. A few weeks ago i fell off the wagon in a big way, so I have to sort myself out and get back to being sober. I stopped drinking back in 2002 but after splitting up with me ex in september I have been hitting it a bit.

So if you feel like talking to someone…then don’t phone me the time difference is stupid and you will just wake me up!!;)

Liver damage? Fuck, that’s serious. What were the symptoms?

I do like the idea of a Therapy? fans’ booze support group though. Anyone else want to join the T?totallers? :p

I’ve been goin through this too! Haven’t smoked any hash in 2005 (which is pretty good start) and was off the booze for 6 weeks. Fell off the wagon a few days ago but definitely gonna try and drink in moderation from now on.

I can totally relate to the feelings of being a recluse / crap nights out on Coca Cola. Its definitely worth it in the long run though.

I think everyone reaches a burn out point where you just have to start treating your body with a bit more respect. Gettin wasted all the time fucks up your sleeping patterns too.

No-ones takin my smokes from me though!

I had a liver infection when I was 16 because of too many drugs, and then resently I have been blacking out a bit and I had serious pains any time I drank. I just lloks like I was run down and got another infection in it I don’t know how but I have been hammering it. Drinking about 8 pints every night some weeks can’t be good.

I have taken notice of the whole problem as friday I got an e.mail from my old flat mate, who used to try annd put Keith Richards to shame and he has been told by his doctor that he has very high blood pressure and that he could have a heart attack if he goes on a big bender again. He is 27!
So this saturday I went out and didn’t drink at all which was very hard and I gave up smoking as well so I was alittle on edge. Bu the people i was with don’t smoke so I watch them get very very pissed and I spent the night chatting to Girls and not slurring like them.
Yesterday I went to the beach and had a run and a swim so two days down many to go.
How did your weekend go?

I’m working on my vices.

I’m down to about 10 cigarettes a week, the method I used to cut down (from about 15 a day) was to brag very loudly to everyone that I was giving up smoking so I can now no longer smoke in the company of 99% of my friends and family without a)losing much face and b)getting a right bollocking off my mum.

Never been a really heavy drinker but the tee-total boyfriend means I’m virtually booze free. He’s not at all preachy but it’s not much fun to be the only one drinking, especially when you can’t have a smoke with your pint…

Having your friends know that you are not smoking anymore or drinking can help you stay straight to an extent. I think my friends back home were surprised when they heard I was back drinking and smoking like i used to after quitting years ago. But over here I don’t really know anyone so no one judges me or stops me.
But I’m focused on being good (to an extent) and seeing family and child in august.

But having a partner that doesn’t drink can be a god send and a pain in the arse as well depending on how you see it. My ex and her friends didn’t drink and thats why they think i’m satan.
