I can’t stand him but every man should get some respect when he’s on the brink of death.

I saw a news report earlier which said this current pope believes in the power of suffering or some old bollocks like that.
I suppose the search for a new pope is a bit like the search for a new James Bond or Doctor Who.I saw the favourites on the ITN news they’re all in their 70’s and 80’s.

And you’re saying that’s like finding a new Doctor Who or James Bond…? :p

A little while ago (weeks, maybe), they were saying on the news about possible replacements, and giving the ages, and one of them was about 71, I think, and they said that he was considered a bit of an outside chance because he was a little too young. I think venerability is considered a plus for the Pope (which I can’t really argue with).

Which may come to end on April Fool’s day.
But I think Bad Karma is right.
I also think that if it’s true, then there’s something in what the Pope said, too.
Lives (even good lives) are defined by conflict (strife, pain, et al)

for a guy who’s supposedly God’s right hand man, he sure is fighting going off to meet his maker. But isn’t that his whole gig, preparing folks for the here-after?

They keep saying he thinks his work isn’t done HUMMM.. thinking you’re the only person in the world could do something…reminds me of something…oh yeah Pride. Isn’t that a no-no in his profession?

Yeah it’s something to do with people who suffer are closer to God.

I’m sure that’s how the Pope sees it.

Coincidentally I was just rereading Auguries of Innocence (Blake’s poem that begins:
‘To see a world in a grain of sand
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour.’)

There’s a bit later on that goes like this:
‘It is right it should be so:
Man was made for joy and woe;
And when this we rightly know
Through the world we safely go.
Joy and woe are woven fine,
A clothing for the soul divine.
Under every grief and pine
Runs a joy with silken twine.’

I mention this purely because I haven’t fulfilled my pretention quota for this week. ;)

You can be antipope.

@Bad Karma,:) you’re surely cheating, though, if it’s from Phoenix Nights, how can it be reading material? Or do you have the script books?

It’s pretty mundane, really: When a new Pope is decided upon, you just basically deny that he is really pope, and just claim that you are the true pope. Antipope’s basically differ only in that they don’t live in the Vatican.

But it does sound cooler, and does present opportunities to play ‘Antipope by the Damned. ;)

Well, I believe you have to set yourself up as some sort of alternative, so I guess it depends how you want to define that. But I gather that at least a few people have to genuinely acknowledge that you are truly God’s envoy on Earth, so you’ve got to ask yourself: how reliable are your friends, and how much respect do you hold with them? :)
