For I do not seek to understand that I may believe, but I believe in
order to understand. For this I believe — that unless I believe, I
should not understand.”

yes.

Quote (author unknown):

but do you understand that you believe I don’t understand?

yes

Quote (author unknown):

I believe you don’t.

I believe you are mistaken. But I also believe you believe I am wrong about my belief that you are mistaken. But don’t worry: I understand.

Are you sure? I thought that was Socrates/Plato?
The one thing that I know is that I know nothing.

how can i believe that you are mistaken when i believe that i am mistaken in the belief that you can mistake any of the beliefs you had the mistake to believe in in the first place?

If I did have a belief, and if I was mistaken in that belief (the belief that I made the mistake of believing in), then you would not be mistaken to believe that I was mistaken. However (and this is important) if I did not have a belief that I was mistaken to believe in, then you would be mistaken to believe that I had mistaken any of the beliefs that I had the mistake to believe in in the first place (as you say). If you believed that you were mistaken to believe that I was mistaken to beleieve any of the beliefs that I had made the mistake to believe in in the first place, and that you believe I am mistaken, then all you say is that you believe both that I am mistaken and that you are mistaken to believe this. Since belief is not equivalent to understanding (unless I am very much mistaken- and I believe I am not) , then it is possible to believe two contradictory things, so long as you believe that one of them may be mistaken.

I read somewhere that the original meaning of the word ‘moron’ was ‘someone having the intellect of a seven-year-old.’ Which is pretty specific, when you think about it, and also means that you can call anyone below the age of seven a moron, and it’s technically a compliment.

People, don’t abuse this knowledge. ;)
