Everything, of course. :D

No, seriously, it depends on what you like in his music.
Murder Ballads and No More Shall We Part may be the easiest way to get into his later music, The Good Son as well. I prefer his early, much rawer stuff like Tender Prey, Your Funeral My Trial or even old Birthday Party stuff.

Maybe the best to start with would be a Best Of.

Yeah, the best of is mostly great (except for the Ship Song which just sort of creeps me out (I think it’s the really dubious video that goes with it more than anything)). Let Love In is a good one, too.

But yeah, just about anything, really.

I would say Murder Ballads too. It’s the only Nick Cave cd I have and still listen to that every once in a while. And there’s duet with Kylie too!!! :p There’s also one with PJ Harvey but she scares me…

So what songs do you prefer from it? Maybe you should buy the album that those songs are on and stop wasting our time. :p ;)

Has anyone got Abbatoir Blues/Lyre Of Orpheus? Better than his previous album, i think. Can’t remember what it was called… :s

Oh, and just when did Blixa leave?

I love that song - they used to show it on MTV all the time a good few years back…

I already said that I liked Let Love In (I meant the album, not just the song). But I guess I’d go with the majority vote here and say Murder Ballads is worth getting. The first album I got was Boatman’s Call, but that’s more minimal, really. A good album to pass out to. :)

The Best Of is a good way in. Let Love In is good, kind of shows off all his styles. I don’t like Murder Ballads, it’s mainly a bit unfocussed and shallow… though Stagger Lee is an ace song, brilliant when I saw him sing it live last year (smug!). No More Shall We Part and Abbatoir/Lyre are fantastic but softer in places, and if you just want your head caved in (no pun) then go for the early stuff. So in short… probably start from the Best of and see what you like!

 ;) Stagger Lee is very cool. I love the way the piano and the electric guitar sort of blend together on those chords. PLus the lyrics are as funny as fuck, obviously. :D

I can’t say exactly when Blixa went but I remeber it being not too long after the Nomore Shall We Part tour ending, though I’m probably wrong.

I quite like the new ones, served me very well along with a certain “Long Distance” when I was sat in a castle at night having a few drinks, which I’m doing now, except I’m at home

Personally I’d say buy everything, all at once, well maybe start with Murder Ballards :D

I don’t think Abbatoir Blues is really better than Nocturama though it’s really good.

Blixa left the Bad Seeds in early 2003.

Ah, any idea why he left? I’m still shocked at the complete image turnaround that occurred during his time in the Bad Seeds. Starting off as a slightly podgy guy with a huge mullett and a cheap suit, eventually turning into the living embodiment of cool sophistication. When did that happen? ;)

Ah, yeah, Nocturama. It wasn’t bad, but nothing really stood out on it for me. Whereas Hiding All Away is worth the price of the album alone, in my opinion. :)

EDIT: though I got Abbatoir Blues as a Christmas present, so I guess strictly the price of the album was zero ;)

But maybe Murder Ballads or Nocturama. I was going to post an almost identical post to allroy’s about Babe, I’m On Fire and Bring It On from Nocturama. Two great songs!

Arn’t links (at the very least from the forum section) from their website to Neubuaten’s and the other things Blixas been involved in such as films and whatnot? All seems friendly enough :)

Yeah, Babe is an amazing song. That reminds me that Nocturama exists, which means I was way out on the Blixa leaving time. Oh god, I’ll put the drink down now and stop yakking crap. Sorry folks. :p

Anyone see the Babe Im on Fire video? Very very funny. I love the way the band has a real tongue in cheek sense of humour despite wha the music might suggest! Stagger Lee video’s another amusing one…
Dunno why everyone’s advising Murder Ballads, true I’ve only listened to it twice but it didnt really strike me as being particularly interesting, maybe someone could explain what I missed? I did like the PJ Harvey song and Curse of Millhaven is really funny too… the liver version on God is in The House DVD is cool.

Yeah, I’ve got the dvd with nocturama. Anyone else got the video/dvd of their previous videos? The one with the same cover as the Best Of…
I think there’s two versions (probably the dvd version has more), but it’s cool to see. Especially all the comments from the band inbetween vids, like Nick talking about his and Blixa’s dancing in the Weeping Song vid: ‘we looked like two gay businessmen. At a disco.’

The video to Loverman is brilliant, though.

(Just been relistening to Nocturama, and so far it still hasn’t really grabbed me. Oh well.)

I’d also say the “Best Of”-album is the perfect buy for starters. It represents both, his noisy beginnings and his quiter latter days.

Personally, I’m a bigger fan of his quiet, piano man period. “The Boatman’s Call” is his very best album. “No More Shall We Part” is recommendable, too. I really didn’t care about “Nocturama”, though.

The new album is very good a double one at that and well worth the money. The b-sides is ok but if you don’t know much by him then don’t bother and like most people have said the murder ballads is great.
