The General Election

So who do you think will win?

Did any of the Wombles vote?

I think Labour will win again but only by a small majority and the Tories will probably be looking for yet another leader in the next couple of days.Did anyone see the news a couple of nights ago when Rory Bremmner was dressed up as Michael Howard? It was a very good impression and the reporters were more interested in him than the real Howard and Rory was signing lots of autographs for kids.
I think the Lib Dems will win a few seats off the tories but i’m not sure if it will be enough to make them the second biggest party.

Well, I’m voting LibDem tonight. I think it’s pathetic that Blair is trying to bully people into voting Labour by saying if you go for LibDems you’ll be letting the Tories in ‘through the back door’. I just hope the next government has the sense to install a system of proportional representation, which is what we should really be at already.

Labour in not a word that used to go hand in hand with war and generally screwing the little guy but that has all changed thanks to Tony and Co. I would like to talk about this in lenght but sadly my mouth is quicker than my hands.

Get out and vote for god sake, peoples lives depend on it.

I’m seriously naive in the ways of elections, Hooch, how would/does a system of proportional representation differ from whatever the hell you call what we have?

I voted for Labour - purely for economic reasons. It pissed me off doing it though cause the other two are so piss poor. I dont think the Lib Dems are strong enough to run the country and as for Conservative - Well I just hope I never see another Tory government in my lifetime.

I just hope Blair stands down and lets Gordon Brown take over, i would have felt so much better voting Labour had he been leader.

The far right party in Switzerland has “mellowed out” and is stearing into a right of center party, at the same time the “conservatives” are trying to get votes with right-wing slogans. Rather confusing at times.

No they are not big - they stand in local elections and are not really a threat anywere (although they did previousely get about 7 seats in Burnley in the local elections). They believe in things like the death penalty and refusung asylum & repatriation of foreigners.

I actually caught a bit of the coverage here in the states. Our C-Span channel which covers congress is showing the BBC feed. I swore they said that they were pumping out results with 45 minutes of the close…that’s silly! We take forever here.

Being someone not from Britain I thought it was kind of neat to see how you guys do it. I like how they announce the results by district/precint or however they do it, and certify it right there with the candidates standing on stage. It’s almost like a beauty contest. I was just hoping to hear them say “John Jones-Silly Party…Not”
and see the candidate break down in tears and run away..now that would be entertaining

I was surprised to see how much it was exactly like the old Monty Python’s Flying Circuit bit. Even with the way the commentator would be interviewing someone and the keep cutting them off and going to the results, then come back real quick and continue. I’ll have to say your commentators give the politicians more shit than ours do. I watched this guy who I guess was head of the Torries, and the commentator kept giving him crap because he kept saying they were improving, but the commentator kept pointing out that they were still in the minority. Kind of funny.

By the way which one is the Silly and Very Silly Parties?

In Northern Ireland our election results won’t be known until the end of the day we had the Westminster and local coucil elections yesterday.I’m very disillusioned and apathetic when it comes to local politics and sometimes i’m fascinated and repulsed at the same time.I predict for today more big gains for Sein Fein and the DUP(these parties are very extreme and their votes have been increasing in each election),while the more moderate parties like the UUP(i voted them) and SDLP will suffer more losses and the political stalemate will continue.
Most of my english mates voted Lib Dem yesterday,a couple of them were Labour voters in the previous election but Iraq made them switch to Lib Dem.
I didn’t take part in any of the anti-war stuff because i knew sadly it would be a total waste of time.
I just saw the news Howard is standing down as the leader of the Tories because he would be too old for the next election.
What do you think of a 3rd victory for Tony Blair and how long do you think it will be until Gordon Brown will be the PM?

Misanthropologist we have proportional representation over here, this link will explain it better than i could http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/proportional_representation.htm oh and did you notice David Tennant in the Labour campaign advert?

You should have voted if you were anti war because if everybody who felt strongly about the war voted then Charles Kennedy would be getting the keys to no# 10.

Thanks, that link was great. I won’t be performing any seminars to explain it just yet, but I’ve got a much better idea of it now. ;)
No, I didn’t see David Tennant, though I heard that he was in the campaign adverts. Did he say or do anything, or was he just lurking in the background trying on scarfs? ;)

645 out of 646 have been declared now, over here the big winners were the DUP with 9 seats and Sinn Fein with 5 and the UUP were hammered they only have 1 seat now while thanks to tactical voting from unionists in some areas the SDLP managed 3 seats which is a very good result for them because everyone expected them to lose out to Sinn Fein. With the increased majorities of the DUP and Sinn Fein i doubt they’ll ever agree on anything and we’ll probably have direct rule for the next 20 years.
