Which should I go for? There’s a song I heard about 10 years ago which I loved, but can’t remember what album it was from. It was definately the first song on the album.

I think it could have been Pretty Hate Machine, does this have a rocking first song?

That song Alan might have been Head Like A Hole from Pretty Hate Machine but it came out in 1989,just over ten years ago The Downward Spiral came it out it’s first song Mr Self Destruct is quite rocking as well.I’d reccomend either of those albums as an introduction to NIN and the new album With Teeth is pretty damn good too.The Fragile while a good album might not be the best album for a noob to start with.

Bah, I could pull a better album out of my ass.

The lyrics are cringeworthy. For example “less concerned with fitting into the world.. your world that is” (from ‘Only’). What the fuck? Trent is 40 this year. These are lyrics I’d expect from an 18 year-old emo singer.

Some songs are good enough, but there are just too many skippers.

It’s not as good as The Downward Spiral, Pretty Hate Machine, Broken, Fixed, Things Falling Apart, The Fragile… come to think of it, this is by far my least favourite NIN release. In fact it’s so bad I’m considering selling my tickets for the Brixton shows.

I didn’t want to completely slag it off cos I thought it would grow on me. In fact, I think the opposite occurred.

i’ve had it since tuesday now and thought i’d wait a few days at least before giving an opinion. whilst i admit that it is indeed a good record, there is something quintessentially “missing” from it. this is the first nine inch nails album that i haven’t got chills the first time i listened to it. i have to agree with jsar666’s comment about some of the lyrics being cringeworthy. trent has been pretty much writing the same song for nearly 20 years now. it’s a good record, no doubt about that, but it just doesn’t feel, and this is going to sound incredibly pretentious, “real”. personally i don’t think it’s anywhere near the fragile or the downward spiral. but then again, they are quite lofty heights to reach.

god i’m full of shit.

No way Joe Fixed is crap i know it’s only a remix EP but i think it’s the worst NIN release.

You should get “And all that could have been” as a starter, its live and its class, might be a bit dearer than the others though coz “Still” comes with it… Downward Spirals a good bet too

Sorry, BK, but I’d say that the remix album Further Down the Spiral is by far the biggest pile Trent released and had the nuts to call an album.

My opinions…

Pretty Hate Machine- Awesome

Broken- Still damn good

The Downward Spiral- Lots of damn good, some not so good.

The Fragile- I got bored myself. Wasn’t impressed, and was supremely disappointed after hearing Perfect Drug a year earlier (I think) and expected it to rock in the same vein.

With Teeth- Ya know, I went into this not expecting anything, and I kinda like it. I think in much the same way as The Downward Spiral there are gems here and utter poo as well.

All in all, it’s the inconsistancy of each of the albums after Broken that makes them difficult for the older fans to swallow. The songs have no real connections to eachother.

surely the fragile remix album “things falling apart” was the worst. it had about ten versions of starfuckers on it. and the original starfuckers isn’t great anyway.

Things Falling Apart wasn’t too bad the cover of Metal was alright and most of the remixes were listenable.Fixed is just awful not a decent track on it.

I guess they are a little lazy - a new EP or something along the lines of ‘Still’ would be nice every so often.

I can’t remember if it was in Rocksound or Kerrang but Trent is supposed to be writing songs for the next album already,if thats true i still don’t expect a new NIN album before 2010.
The remix albums were always just stopgap releases,i was expecting a new one next year with about 3 remixes of The Hand That Feeds.

I’ve got the single with the Photek remixes already, but NIN remix albums are a bit lazy when it comes to the tracklistings.Look at Things Falling Apart which only has about 5 different songs(Starfuckers was remixed 3 times and the obligatory unreleased tracks) from The Fragile,i think that is just lazy and they didn’t put much effort or thought into it.There are loads of tracks from The Fragile a double album they could have remixed.

i don’t like remix albums. ever. full stop. if they’re free with an album (like the manics forever delayed remix cd) it’s fine but i think expecting people to buy a full price remix album takes the piss. the only nin remix cd i have is “further down the spiral” and that was only as i recieved it as a birthday present some years ago.
