Are Therapy? metal?

#

Started by stoon

Funny thing about Therapy?, they seem to have a lot of fans who are into heavy metal. Also they always play heavy rock festivals and seem to be popular in the metal press (Kerrang etc). Now don’t get me wrong I have nothing against heavy metal fans. It’s just that personally my tastes would be more ‘indie’ than ‘metal’ and I’ve always thought of Therapy? as much more of an indie/punk band (especially the first couple of albums up to and including Nurse) than a metal one…although I have seen Andy wear a studded leather wristband which is a worrying development. Obviously good music is good music and we shouldn’t be worrying about boundaries and genres, but I was just wondering if the majority of people on this messageboard are indie geeks like me or ferocious heavy metal fiends?

Also on a different but slightly related note, has anyone ever heard the song ‘Like Herod’ by Mogwai? They’re about as indie as you can get but that song is more terrifying than any metal song I’ve ever heard, especially the version on the new BBC Sessions album.

I’d just call them a Rock band. Obviously with 10 albums and a crunching guitar sound, they have the back catalogue to call upon if they’re playing to a more Metal audience.

Rock band, yeah. That’s fair enough.

I went to see them play in Belfast on the Infernal Love tour and was almost crushed by sweaty long-haired moshers. It was fun though.

I think they’ve been categorised as almost everything at some point or another. ;) _I_ know what they sound like, so it’s only if I have to explain it to someone who hasn’t heard them before. And then just playing some is probably easier. :)

they have some songs that seem to fit snugly in the metal bracket, but then they have some songs that fit snugly in with pop, indie, punk etc etc. if you want a category to fit all of the songs in, it would probably be rock… but then this would be different person by person because everyone sees the songs from a different perspective. the metalheads probably think t? are pop, the popheads probably think theyre rock and so on and so on…

TI find the early mini albums (Pleasure Death, Babyteeth) to be metal with an hint of industrial to them in some places.
Troublegum to be a hybrid of punk/metal.
Infernal Love I’d call metal, with the exception of Loose with has a bouncy punk feel and maybe Stories.
Semi-Detatched I think of as Metal, Punk and underground Indie stuff all mixed together.
From then on, I’d say they were more punk than anything, but there’s always been a few tracks on every album with metal tones.

I gave up “metal” about 15 years ago. It belonged to a certain time, and that time has gone.

T? are “rock”. Or “indie” (save the A&M phase). Metal, no, when I think of metal I think of Europe’s “Final Countdown”. I find the term “metal” all a bit embarrassing, now.

In fact even AC/DC… would anyone describe that as “heavy metal” these days? I don’t think so?

The only truly “heavy metal” band I loved, and still love, is Rock Goddess. Try finding anything about them on the internet now.

Tim.

Infernal Love is a very hard album to catorgorise i think i would just call it rock,i remember reading in one interview Andy called it poetic rock.

When people ask me what they sound like i just say they’ve done everything, which is true, and which i think is far better for a band to do. Imagine all the albums they’d released where all punk, or all metal, i’d probably be a bit bored by now.

I think most of it is because the band are influenced by everything, so they try and incoperate it all into their music. I like metal but i hate the metallers who think metal is the only good music (and indeed many metal bands are elitist pricks) and all the punks who think punk is the only true music (and many punk bands are elitist pricks, especially the “hardcore” ones)

I think all bands should be as open and varied as Therapy?

Sorry for the rant

Well, they had the indie appeal first, then the metal press got interested, but I’d call T? a crossover band, cause they had that appeal to them.

Certain songs have a metal flavour to them, but due to the eclectic sound of the band I’d just label them rock to be honest.
