I’ve not heard their old stuff…not that keen on the current incarnation of Zyklon though.
Have you heard any old Dissection? Storm Of The Light’s Bane is a class black metal album (Swedish not Norwegian though).
Zyklon B is pretty much a differnt band… more Black Metal then death metal… it was done before anthems. Not heard Dissection, will check them out.
@d?…I only have one of the first Mayhem albums before the guitar player was killed. They have gone through many vocalists over the years.. sort of spinal tap but less self combustion!

Maniac pretty much does most of the vocals, and he is my favourite Mayhem Vocalist, but really only on Wolf’s Lair Abyss. At earlier times he is, as you say, shit. Haven’t actually heard anything after WLA, though.

I have the album with Funeral Fog on.. thats all, the music is fantatsic it’s just his voice. Once again i got my info about the many vocalists of Mayhem from some book.. which proven before to be wrong so i shall stop believing it!
The Enslaved Album I recommend is
Vikingligr Veldi- it’s just amazing and has Trym from emperor on drums.

I can tell I’m going to have trouble asking for that at the record store.
Funeral Fog is an excellent song. Hmm, I’m now cribbing from Wiki, but De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas apparently doesn’t have Maniac on vocals, but I haven’t listened to that in quite a while. May have to listen to that today so I can remember the vocals. If I do, I’ll report back this evening. ;)

Attila Csihar does vox on De Mysteriis dom Satanas, he’s a Hungarian cult session vocalist who re-appears every now and again on cult records. Lately he’s been spotted in te Sunn0))) camp. Here’s his Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attila_Csihar
This is fairly common knowledge though
Right now I’m listening to Satanica by our Polish Blasphemers: Behemoth. Check it.

Hehe, yup: I prefer Maniac. :)
Oh, but it was Freezing Moon that I was thinking of that I particularly like, not Funeral Fog. D’Oh.
I may have to move on to Anthems to The Welkin at Dusk, now. ;)
Still think they should have called it Anthems To Whelking at Dusk, though. Would show their lighter side, I think. :D

I have Isa by Enslaved which is pretty cool. Also been giving Darkthrone a good ole spin of late (but the poor production can get on my tits somewhat)
I’m also going to see Satyricon sometime next week I think! yay for black metal!

Darkthrone are cool.. but as you said the production does make it harder for me to get into. Satyricon i really like.. i do think their latest album is good but a bit tame in a way, i prefered stuff like ‘the shadowthrone’.But they were really cool and the new songs came across really well live… i can’t wait to see Enslaved in a few weeks:)
I did order a few days ago some album by “thou shalt suffer” which is Samoth and Ihsams pre Emperor band..so i expect the production to be shithouse!

I just checked their website for the first time in a while and was a bit shocked to read that the singer (Jon Nödtveidt) shot himself on August 16th

the production on Ihsahms album is very dry and not brilliant… but i do think the songs are very strong and play it alot… but i guess next to his Emperor work they will always seem lesser.

This week I’ll be having black metal overload as I’ve ordered:
Immortal - Pure Holocaust
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Domsathan
Carpathian Forest - Fuck You All! (charming title ;))
I’ve also read some good things about the Italian ‘industrial black metal’ band Aborym (one of Bard “Faust” Eithun’s bands) so I might buy that as well.

The Aborym album I would describe as fucking menacing too! If I’m honest I’m a little concerned about how much I’m enjoying this kind of stuff at the moment :D

I’ve heard some MP3’s when Codex came out but it failed to keep my attention. Eschaton is different, I have heard a lot and this is some of the darkest shit I have ever heard. Try Axis of Perdition and Blut aus Nord if you’re into this kind of OTT wall of sound black metal. I listened back to back Eschaton and Disintegrate, I think it’s time for some T? to regain my confidence in the world ;)

I’ve been listening to The god that never was from Blut Aus Nord, the rest I’m not familiar with. Axis of Perdition have only two albums, an insanely crazy heavy motherfucker called Physcial Illucinations blahblah and Deleted scenes from the Transition Hospital wich is markedly slower and more like moviescore for some warped Hitchcock flick.

Actually I don’t listen to a lot of Black, definitely not the all too romantical or too ridiculously satanic stuff. I do like to scare myself from time to time with these new breed nihilistic type black industrial sort of thingy bands like the ones we’ve been name-dropping. Actually here’s another one for you: Deathspell Omega, I’ve been listening quite a lot to their Kénôse album. It’s a mesmerizing thing.
I Like Zyklon and Behemoth but they’re usually qualified as Deathmetal though. There’s one more band Ajattara from Finland, they’re not so extreme but got a good dark vibe running through their music. The lyrics are in Suomi but I happen to know some people who translate bits off them for me, and it’s all based on a very misanthropic worldview.
