Days of your life

MONDAY:

-MOST likely to have a heart attack: Weekend alcohol binges and the stress of going back to work means you’re 20 per cent more likely to die of a heart attack on Monday. A 10-year study for the British Medical Journal looked at 80,000 people in Scotland between 1986 and 1995.

-CHECK your shares: The “Monday Effect” is recognised by stock market investors who noticed that share prices on Monday continue in the same direction they moved on the Friday before.

-CHECK your battery: The AA’s busiest period is between 8am and 10am on Monday when thousands of cars won’t start. It blames flat batteries caused by cars left standing over the weekend.

-LOCK your bike: More are stolen on this day than any other, says Halifax General Insurance.

TUESDAY:

-COMMIT suicide: Men are most likely to kill themselves on a Tuesday, according to a study by sociologist Riaz Hassan, of Flinders University, Australia. Depressed men are thought to survive the “Monday blues” only to feel even worse on Tuesday when everyone else is feeling better.

-SEND an email: Nearly 24 per cent of all emails are sent on this day - more than any other, according to IT firm DoubleClick. Just 3.2 per cent of emails are sent over the weekend.

WEDNESDAY:

-LEAVE the car at home: Most traffic accidents happen on Wednesdays, says vehicle management firm Velo. They studied 55,000 claims - and urge people to drive on Sundays, when the cost of accident claims is lowest.

THURSDAY:

-SPLASH out: More money is spent on credit cards on Thursday evenings than any other night, says Intelligent Finance. The bank blames the rise of late-night shopping.

-MAN the barricades: America, Russia and Iran all overthrew their leaders on this day. The American Declaration of Independence was signed on a Thursday in 1776 while Russia’s new government was established on a Thursday in March, 1917. Iran’s Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini returned
from exile on a Thursday in 1979.

-HAVE S8x in the morning: Cortical steroids, which stimulate the S8x hormones, peak on Thursday, the middle of the seven-day cycle. S8x is also best first thing in the morning when levels of testosterone in men and oestrogen in women are five times higher.

-BUY a brolly: Thursdays are wetter than any other day of the week, a seven-year study by British meteorologists revealed. They found an average of 2.97mm of rain fell in the South Coast on a Thursday. The driest day is Saturday with 1.14mm.

FRIDAY:

-BRACE yourself: Of the 10 worst earthquakes in history, five of them struck on a Friday. They include the 2001 quake that killed 30,000 in Gujarat, India, the tremor that flattened Anchorage, Alaska, in 1964 and measured 9.2 on the Richter Scale, and 2003’s quake in Bam, Iran, that
left 40,000 dead.
-LOCK the car: Insurers are busiest on this day with a 17 per cent rise in claims for theft of cars and of their contents. Axa says the lowest number of claims - 10.5 per cent - comes in on a Sunday.

-TAKE risks: While investors play safe early in the week, they’re statistically more likely to take risks on a Friday, says economist Glenn Pettengill of Emporia State University, Kansas. US bodyclock expert Martin Moore Ede says this is because we’re more likely to be sleep deprived at the end of the week and less able to think clearly.

SATURDAY:

-GET alcohol poisoning: The number of people admitted to casualty suffering from the effects of alcohol soars by 64 per cent on Saturday compared to the daily average, according to a study published in the British Medical Journal.

-TRAVEL by air: Of 20 major air disasters since 1930, NONE have occurred on this day. The worst days statistically for air travel are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.

-GIVE birth to a prime minister: Of the 19 British prime ministers elected since 1900, six were born on a Saturday, including Harold Wilson, Stanley Baldwin and Anthony Eden. Michael Howard is a Monday baby…

SUNDAY:

-BATTEN down the hatches: Nearly a quarter of all insurance claims for storm damage are made on a Sunday, according to AXA. The insurance firm receives 23 per cent of claims for damaged roofs on this day, but just 8.1 per cent on Thursdays.

-BATTLE of the S8xes: Women’s stress levels are at their highest on a Sunday morning while men’s are at their lowest, according to a study by the National University of Cork, Ireland. Women’s peaking adrenaline levels could explain a surge in calls to the Samaritans, who take a
quarter of all calls on this day.
