it isn’t easy giving up something?

Addiction is characterized by the repeated, compulsive seeking or use of a substance despite harmful consequences. Addiction is often accompanied by adverse physical and psychological dependence on the substance. Nicotine is the addictive drug in tobacco.
The 1982 Surgeon General’s Report stated that “Cigarette smoking is the major single cause of cancer mortality in the United States.” This statement is as true today as it was in 1982. Because cigarette smoking and tobacco use is an acquired behavior, one that the individual chooses to do, smoking is the most preventable cause of premature death in our society.
About 87% of lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women, and is one of the most difficult cancers to treat. It is very hard to detect when it is in the earliest, most treatable stage. Fortunately, lung cancer is largely a preventable disease. Groups that promote nonsmoking as part of their religion, such as Mormons and Seventh-day Adventists, have much lower rates of lung cancer and other smoking-related cancers.
But cancers account for only about half of the deaths related to smoking. Smoking is also a major cause of heart disease, bronchitis, emphysema, and stroke, and contributes to the severity of pneumonia.
It isn’t easy giving up something that is so much a part of what you do every day?

FACT!

:p

I don’t even smoke and I agree with this 100%. I think it tastes awful and yes, I am aware that it clogs your arteries thereby potentially leading to impotence, it fucks up your lungs, etc, etc, but I still know it looks cool as fuck.

Hobos smoking isn’t cool. It shows that instead of having a wash, they decided to buy fags with the little money they got that day. Silly hobos. :D

But smoking hobos look cooler than non-smoking hobos. Smoking can only do so much, it can’t turn things around. If McFly all started smoking (if they don’t already, I’ve no idea) they’d still be lame, but slightly cooler due to the smoking. I mean, what would Reservoir Dogs be without the smoking? NOTHING. Quentin Tarantino owes his career to Malboro.

Smoking gives me special coughing and spitting powers faggoty non-smokers do not have. It also took care of my boysih looks by giving me some more manly lumberjack facial features and a deep growling voice to chase dogs away with. So many more pros than cons.

Fuck yes! See, I’m a non-smoker, but I’m not self-righteous. I know I’m going to die too, but I’m aiming for dying through a pizza gorging session or sex with Baltic hookers. Whichever is easier and cheaper. In either case, I’ve just chosen something other than smoking.

The self-righteous non-smokers that annoy me the most are the ones who eat junk food, do no exercise and drink like fish. I have a few friends like this and whenever we go out to a pub they always complain about the smokers. Hey honey, if you were that concerned about your health, maybe you would do something other than sit on your couch watching Coronation fucking Street and other garbage until you have to go to bed after work every day while stuffing your face with chip butties.

What’s more, if you go to a pub, expect cigarette smoke. It’s like moving to a house near an airport and complaining about the noise. D’oh! New legislation is of course appearing all over the world to ban smoking in pubs, but apart from protecting the staff from being exposed to smoke, I don’t see the point.

The point is to have choice. Every smoker has decided by himself whether to smoke or not.

I want also to have a choice whether to be surrounded by smoke or not when i go to the pub. I dont want smoking people to decided this for me.

The best way is to make a separate smoking areas in pubs, so everyone can chose to go to smoking or non-smoking area.

Let everybody decide for himself!.

I read that 75% of smoke actually goes into the air, not the lungs of the smoker. In that way, if you are not smoking, but people around you are, you better light up for face the consequences. Be the asshole, or be the victim. You can’t be both, and you have to be one.

i go to the bars even where people smoke, fine with me :D

My point is that the smoking people have decided for non-smoking, that if you go to the bar you have to and will be exposed to cigaret smoke.
That’s what i don’t like. Let the non-smokers decide for themselves whether they want to inhale the smoke or not. Make separate rooms and that’s it. then everybody have a right of choice.

I smoke but fully support the ban on smoking in public places. I also think they should put more tax on it. Both of these things will at least force people to cut down and hopefully prevent people (esp. kids) from taking up the habit.

There is nothing good about smoking. Apart from the fact that it makes you look cool, dammit.

p.s. I removed the link in that guy’s post cause it looked a lot like spam, I left the post since it’s started a conversation going…

I’m not sure if raising the taxes is the right idea. Norway has an extremely high taxing level on cigs and as a result we have a lot of grey-market imports from other countries (especially ones in the EU). People also smoke like chimneys. If anything, the high price levels make people more dedicated. My siblings went to Prague and they told me people would light up waiting for a bus or tram and if public transport arrived before they were able to finish their cigs, they just chucked them. In Oslo if that happens, smokers quickly put out their cigs, but stick ‘em back in the packet.

I guess if everybody raised their levels of taxes to about the same level it might work…

I’m actually very glad there is more of an anti-smoking attitude nowadays. Ever seen those smoking adverts from the 40s and 50s? Geesh. I mean we have the Malboro Man stuff now, but it could have been infinitely worse. And of course the films where everybody was smoking and you were thought a freak not to.

I guess IMO the issue of allowing smoking in pubs should be down to the pub owner. If they want to keep the place reeking of fags, then so be it.

I only ever smoke when I’m out drinking… I really wonder whether it’s actually addictive, or just habit-forming because for all the cigarettes I’ve smoked, I could easily go forever without having one. I just choose not to.
