i think the record labales are no longer interested in hip-hop bands. they look for solo hip-hop artists. do you really need 6-7 guys only (!!!) to read lyrix???!!!!!
But when this chosen artist succeeds he starts to promote his mates and his band.

Some examples, which came to my mind:
Eminem and d12
Nelly and St. Lunatics
50 cent and g-unit

IMHO all of them are shit, and there’ll be much more to come.

Fair bit of J5 and Dilated Peoples, don’t really listen to the more mainstream stuff but don’t mind a boogie to it once in a while.

Concrete Schoolyard is my ultimate BBQ song :)

How long do you reckon it will be til the influx of people proclaiming “it’s all shit” from hearing a 50 Cent songs once?

I’ll be honest in saying I ain’t a huge fan of 50 Cent at all. Infact he is what ruins, in my opinion, what a terrific album by The Game (the documentary) is.

At the mo I’m enjoying:
Straight Outta Of Compton - N.W.A.
Laugh now, Cry Later - Ice Cube
The Documentary - The Game :)

Check out EVERLAST’s(from House Of Pain) “Whitey Ford Sings The Blues” album.

If your looking for mellow rap music, it’s about as mellow as it gets. With a pretty good acoustic rock influence.

Saul Williams is quite cool he has been around for years i saw him live in london when i first moved there in 97, he has released some stuff through ninja tunes Big Dada outlet..and coldcut are quite involved with him.
There is alot of good stuff Hip Hop wise on Big Dada that is worth checking out..as it’s less mainstream and certainly more interesting then your regular hip hop.

Was never very impressed with DMX’s rapping style or songs…his gore/horror subject matter was always very cheesy. I know a few friends who rate him, so it’s down to taste really.

oh great, people are still enjoying this thread, makes me happy!

i did get a lot of hip hop stuff lately…
i heard all of eminems records and i have to say thats some really good stuff… but there are also some other cool artists:

as someone mentioned: stereo mc’s - connected …is a brilliant album, but its not just a hip hop album i’d say, theres more than just beats and words!

i wasnt that impressed by saul williams; got his latest album which is a bit boring, except for the song “list of demands” whoooo… i mean there are some other good tracks too but not really my cup of tea, if you know what i mean

at the moment i am busy checking out:
rbx - the rbx files
nate dogg - music and me

actually also some ice cube and dr. dre stuff… ahh theres a lot to do..

Straight Outta Of Compton - N.W.A.

NWA are a funny one with me…i guess i was never a big fan of gansta rap. When Straight out of Compton came out it was brilliant, but i was always more of a fan of Public enemy BUM RUSH THE SHOW was my first album i was bought when i was very very young. I thought Ice Cubes solo stuff was better, AmeriKKKas most wanted and preditor the top of my list. Krs and BDP are favs as well..i seemed to go for more intelligent lyrics. Thats why i thought the chronic was not a good album but 2001 i did like. Busta Ryhmes has a quite agressive style have you heard much of his? I liked the first Dilated Peoples album as well but there last few albums have been very dull. Dose One and Clouddead are just weird and disturbing which i like as it’s rap but not as we know it. Anything by Kool Keith or the first few Ultramagnetic Mc’s albums are also worth buying.

I will ask my friend Bree what to recommend for agressive hip hop as my tastes in genre have gone more left field.

I’m enjoying older Eminem material, anything past ‘marshall mathers’ lp im not so into. I’m not that huge of a fan, but I have to say ‘Kill You’ is cool.

Ice Cube is my fave to me he was NWA (straight outta compton wont leave my diskman!) and his recent effort isnt too bad. But my fave by him at the mo is ‘the war CD’ as it nice and dark and aggressive. :)

Now just checking out DMX’s Grand Champ CD. Theres always a few of my black mates given recommendations to me, but its like any new material.. I love hearing something different.
