The Fall

#

Started by Divers (Simon)

I’ve been a fan for quite a few years and got into them them John Peel. The are not always the easyist band to get into and quite a few of there albums naff/unlistenable but even those albums have one or two amazing songs that make buying it worth it. Also Mark E Smish makes me laugh with things he says or does, sacking your whole band the day of glastonbury including your own wife, is one of my favourites.

Personal favourite albums have been Live at the witch trials and Country on the click the new real Fall album which is brilliant. I saw them live a few years back supporting the magic band and it was on of the top gigs i have seen in years.

Just wondering what other people think of them?

I really like some of their stuff, but some songs are just damn infuriating. I got into them cos of Peel too.

I have 50000 Fall Fans Can’t Be Wrong, but I just didn’t really know where to go after that… any suggestions?

They’re great, not always my cup of tea, but Mark E. Smith definitely is a unique character.

My fave album is I Am Kurious Oranj though I am far from knowing just enough of his extensive discography to decide what’s his best.

The real New Fall Album (country On The Click) Is my recomendation it’s far easier album to listen to then most of there other ones and it’s just chocked full of great songs in my opinion of course.
There more poppy stuff was in the mid eighties, there really early stuff can be hard going, the first album Live at the witch trials is quite punky.

The Fall are just brilliant, and the only band from the first wave of UK punk to have kept the same make-and-do attitude, kept going and moving forward and changing, not looking back, which is what punk was meant to be all about. Unfortunately they are also like a disease and can take over your listening habits completely unless you fight them off a bit from time to time… Fave albums at the moment would be country on the click, bend sinister, and i’m really enjoying Slates at the moment… Pretty daunting when you first get into them as their back catalogue is massive, I’ve got about half the studio albums now and every one has gems on it. They took me a while listening to them to really get into them, but once you’ve cracked it they are a very rewarding band to follow.

It’s hard being a fan of there’s mainly because since they started they release at least a studio album a year plus a handful of live albums and compilations. So they are a expensive band to Like.

I have just remembered a great story about them from years ago.

I was listening to Mark and Lard on there late night radio show and the phone guest was Mark.E Smith.

Mark Radclife was chatting to Mr smith when Lard asked him a question and Mark E Smith said “who are you” Lard replied “Marc Riley I used to be In “he Fall with you as Bassist/Guitarist” so Mark E Smith came back with “oh in that case fuck off!”:D

Another year another fall album.. the new one Imperial Wax Solvent is a real solid album, better than the last one. Also Mr E Smith has his autobiography out last month which i will have to get hold of, i’ve read a few books about the fall so be good to hear his versions of events.

Since my 2005 post at the top of this thread, I’ ve got into them a lot more - seen them live a couple of times etc. I really liked ‘Fall Heads Roll’, but haven’t enjoyed the last two as much

cool cheers for the links, i’m going to go and have a look for it today. Fall head roll and The real new fall album Country on the click are the best two albums they have done i think… but all of them have there strengths, it was just the line up on those two seemed to have the strongest musicians. The last album was a bit of a mess as i don;t think the band had been together long as he picked them up in america when he sacked everyone… again.

Nver been a fan of The Fall (or “Autumn”, as they are called in this country), but I’d be very interested in reading Mark E Smith’s book. I bet he’s equal parts complete nutter and sound bloke.

He’d make a shit Freddie Mercury in a Queen tribute band, though. Just saying, like.

It sort of depends how he drunk or what he is on, i read one book and the writer said he was just a good bloke… but way to intelligent for his own good so gets annoyed and frustrated too quickly and added with booze is very irratic. One of the best live bands i have seen back with the fall heads roll line up, very shambolic but fantastic.. sadly after such a high the fucking magic band came on and bored everyone pissless with there beard stroking music.
