Insomnia

#

Started by mr self destruct

I suffer from insomnia, and it fucking sucks. I’ve tried all the recommended tricks and still I often lie awake into the very small hours. The only thing that gets me to sleep is getting absolutely shitfaced, but then you don’t have very good quality sleep and are still knackered the next day :(

Have you tried going to the doctor and getting some meds? I had to do that a few months ago cos of insomnia. Try going for a long walk or exercise in the evening as well.

For ages I could only get to sleep after a few tins as well but then it got to the point where I was literally drinking every night just to get to sleep and even that wasn’t working… hence a long period of T?totalism ;)

My sleeping quality is still terrible though, and there isn’t much of a pattern to it either, i still find myself nodding off all the time in the middle of the day then lying awake at night. It sucks man

I did go to the doctor a while back and she was prepared to prescribe sleeping tablets. I turned her down though as they’re habit-forming, which wouldn’t be such a good idea for me ;)

what worked for me we’re a combination of sleeping tablets and very hot, relaxing showers.

Before I went to bed, I normally went for a walk (not too long) just to empty my head, then I took a long hot shower. Make sure that you let the water go over your shoulders and neck (that made me more relax). Then I took half the dose of the sleeping tablet the doctor prescribed me, and went off to bed immediately.

some important things:

Don’t ever have an intense work out less then 2 hours before you go to bed. Exercise free’s up endorfines and that gives you energy.

And don’t start thinking: I got to get to sleep, I need to fall asleep now, oh no, it’s not working, fuck I can’t sleep, … This will only make it worse.

After a few weeks of repeating this routine, I got rid of the tablets, but not the hot showers. And now I only do it occasionly when I’m realy stressed out.

An other question: do you have the feeling that your body is tired, but your mind keeps racing?

A fairly good solution for that (well it worked for me) is to keep a pencil and some paper on your bedside table and to note the stuf you’re thinking about down. That way you know that it will be there in the morning. It gave me a conforting feeling.

I sleep fairly ok now, but it still takes me more then an hour to fall asleep after being in bed.

hope the info will be of help

Sleeping tablets can be good for a short term quick fix - my doc gave me a one week course of some very mild ones once. Just to force my body back into a normal routine.

But they are only a temporary fix. What you really need to do is alter your bedtime routine to allow for plenty of winding down time. This might include things like some gentle excercise, shower, reading a book, writing or drawing, some relaxation excercises - anything really that helps you just relax and unwind (well, anything that doesn’t involve too many chemicals). It’s all about making some time to put the days troubles behind you.

Like marja, I also keep paper and pens by the bed in case I get one of those nights where I just can’t sleep. Writing it all down really helps clear out the mental junk.

I was having a real shit time sleeping a couple of months ago - I was only having about 2-3 hrs sleep a night even though I was knackered.

The lovely girlfriend got me some lavender smelly stuff from Boots, that actually helped… you sniff it before you go to sleep and it is supposed to relax you.

I’m pretty sure it is a mental thing, but it does seem to work

How do you know it’s not all the sex that’s keeping them awake at night?

Thanks for the tips. Will definitely try having a relaxing bath or shower, and sniffing lavender. Or I might even be really gay and get some lavender bath oils :)
