Dark Music

#

Started by Simon (Simon)

By this I don’t mean Black metal or Otis Redding. I mean music with a darker feel be it musically or lyricly. I like black comedys and dark humour like jam, and bill hicks, and the same goes for books. Most of my favourite music is like this and it doesn’t have to be heavy.
NIN the early albums Pretty hate machine and Downward spiral are fantastic.
joy Division, and now the cure who I have only just been introduced to. Two Lone swordsmens latest album is a very dark electro album. and I do like the Misfits and Alkaline Trios stuff because the lyrics are great.
Just wondering if there are any other bands or books as it goes that I should check out?

Ministry, Alice In Chains, Depeche Mode, Misery Loves Co, 80’s Matchbox B Line Disaster, Type O Negative, Tool, Paradise Lost, Anathema, Life of Agony… none of those bands are likely to cheer you up on a wet wednesday afternoon but all done corkers of albums.

You know your music Simon, so it’ll be pretty hard to recommend new stuff. Get Pornography by The Cure if you don’t have it, that’s a truly miserable alubm. You could try some Bauhaus or Siouxsie and the Banshees. People sneer at Depeche Mode but Violator and Songs Of Faith and Devotion are dark and cool. Metal-wise I’d go for Paradise Lost and Katatonia, and Black Metal-wise Burzum is just pure fucking misery.

Writers I’d say Will Self, his stuff is well fucked up but tricky to follow as he’s a genius. Irvine Welsh and Charles Bukowski’s stuff is pretty dark and gritty.

Gary Numan : Pure - thats pretty dark, it kinda deals a lot with death, I think he lost a child before writting this.

The Wildhearts : Endless Nameless - Most Wildhearts albums are rock and roll but this was made whent they were all totally fucked on drugs, kinda edgy.

Anathema : A Fine Day To Exit - totally fucking fantastic album and I listen to it at least once a week.

Well don’t say I know everything, I over looked the cure didn’t I! I do have the first four cure albums now and the best of, Pornography is great. See I would say nothing shocking by janes addiction is quite dark but It’s not miserable. Like when Garbage first came out and weren’t shit they were pop with a dark tinge to them which I liked.

I will check out the books you said sam, I can’t admit to being the most well read person in the world but I do have to have a book on the go.

I enjoy writing sugar coated music sometimes with horribly dark lyrics:)

I think 100th Window by Massive Attack is darker than Mezzanine.

I’d definitely give Burzum a go because a lot of his stuff is actually really dark ambient rather than ‘black metal’.

Thats why I listen to alot of Mike patton because some of his lyrics and music like fantomas are sick! (and his singing but thats off the point.)

Afghan Whig’s ‘Gentlemen is a very edgy record, and there should be at least one Greg Dulli record in everyone’s record collection.
The best of The Sisters of Mercy is a great album. Don’t know what the studio albums are like, pretty good I imagine.
The Doors, Alice in Chains, Type O’Negative, Nick Cave.
If you can your hands on it, I’d highly recommend ‘Heartworm’ by Whipping Boy. One of my all time faves. Very dark, very confessional. Not sure how available it is outside of Ireland though

Yes Tomahawk are a personal favourite, to be honest I do buy everything that mr patton puts out.

Nick Cave of course is another person wh writes great dark music, murder ballads is played a lot.
In a strange way Music for a jilted generation by the prodigy i thought was amazing when it came out because it wasn’t this happy clappy dance shit that was around at the time.
Soundgarden super unknown album is also fantastic. the fall, elliot smith, johnny cash, portishead, clouddead.

Have you heard Blue Jam? it’s available on Warp records and puts the tv series to shame, also if you like Bill Hicks check out Doug Stanhope

Dead Can Dance-‘Within The Realm Of A Dying Sun’ is the most depressing record i’ve ever heard, but it’s also hugely enjoyable.

Big Black/Rapeman-Intense/cathartic.Often Scary.Songs about child abuse and self immolation.Dark enough for ye?

Tom Waits-‘Rain Dogs’ is weird yet accessable, ‘Bone Machine’ and ‘The Mule Variations’ are just scary.

Scott Walker’s ‘Tilt’ is as dark as music gets really.I won’t try to describe it though, but it’s like something from Blue Jam

Foetus is pretty damn disturbing, particularly the early stuff.’Hole’ and ‘Nail’ are pretty essential if you’re into NIN, it’s where Trent nicked most of his ideas (both musical and lyrical)

If you like early Nick Cave, check out the Birthday Party. It is totally different to the stuff he’s doing now but is some seriously dark and disturbed stuff.

There’s shitloads more but i’ll leave you with that lot for now.

Have fun!
