How do Therapy? sound without Martin?

#

Started by matthew

After listening to suicide pact numerous times, it rings true that Martin put in an execellent effort playing lead guitar or are those leads not all him. I think therapy? should get another lead guitarist for the band so Andy can still focus on the rhythm at shows and the lead guitarist still make those crazy sounds and atmospherics I hear on suicide. I have never seen therapy live so I suppose only you guys can tell me whether martin leaving the band has had a big impact on the live sound. :)

Andy always was the lead guitarist of therapy? or at least he was it when the guys played live.
Having a second guitar on stage gave a really thick live sound which I missed when I saw them for the first time stripped down to a three piece.

Nevertheless the boys sound ass-tight and edgy nowadays when performing live.

Check out some bootlegs to compare how they sounded with two guitars and how they sound with one.

I definatly don’t think they need a second guitar player. I personally think that their best times where whenever they where a 3-piece, with all respect for Martin.
Gimme Back My Brain sounds best with only one guitar, the intro sounds kinda clumsy now… I love it that way :D

I prefer them as a three piece but I thought it was cool when martin was there on stage as they could improvise with the songs more live

For me Martin was a always a member from Therapy? Now he left and they are a three piece again. But they don’t have to replace him.

But how do they play the solos live if there isn’t a second guitarist? Sure Andy would play the solos from now on, but then Michael would play the main riff underneath and that reminds me of how Nirvana sound on Nevermind. It just does’nt sound as cool if there isn’t a second guitarist me thinks. your thoughts sirs and lasses…

I know the feeling you got matthew but as people has been saying T? doesn’t need 2 guitars at stage. Andy can handle both vocals and guitar (rhythm and solos) pretty easy (well that looks like piece of cake, dunno really is it hard or not).

We have to remember that they used to play over 6 years as three piece and that’s what they were originally, so I think that they’ve gone “back to the roots”. Of course it is hard to present the tracks excatly like on album but no-one can do that.

I think that they kick serious ass as 3 piece.

Andy said that they will remain a three pieces band forever, when Martin left.

And I agree with him, they rock!

When someone asked Andy how could the band play without one guitar he answered: I’ll play twice louder!

Great!
:)

Rock on!
:D

I dont mean to put anyone’s back up, but, I didnt always like what he did, and i didnt think he looked at easea on the stage, a bit…static? not as loose as the others… I dont know man, this is my humble opinion,.I think now as a 3 piece they are a lot more aggressive and much bigger sounding-definitely the joy division medely, I creamed my pants I can tell you.If they did get some1 else, they wud have to be of similar style(…ahem ;) )

Therapy? isn’t the band that wants to perform the songs just like on CD, it’s true that they sound different without a second guitar player, but it’s defenitely not necessary. As a three piece they rock even more I think. Andy is really magnificent in conmbinating guitar and vocals by the way.

Title: Second guitarist

Having followed the band for quite a while now ,a second guitar and a cello gave a,harder, grttier sound, bit like being hit in the bollocks with a bag of spanners ,one guitar and their sound better than anyone else around at the moment but two and a cello and they are unstoppable

Huh? Martin couldn’t play guitar and cello at the same time!

The band are much better on stage now. NANE was written with the band taking into account they would have to be able to play these songs live without anything lacking, so their most recent album sounds excellent on stage which I couldnt say for albums like Semi Detached/Infernal Love where the songs seemed to dip in quality live because of over-emphasis on studio arrangement and layers of guitars.

I have to admit, when Martin left I not a happy bunny at the time. I thought it was a big mistake and would be a regression for the band. And I said so on the board.

However, I have to eat humble pie and admit that T? are now looking better than ever. The last gig in the ambassador was the first I saw as a 3 piece and the best I’ve seen live. Also they have released their best work since Troublegum (I genuinely mean that , unlike Kerrang! who say it about every T? album). So hats off to them.

The cello did bring an extra demension to the albums I admit, but listening back to the 4 piece albums I have to wonder - and I admit I know very little about guitars - did they really exploit the 2 guitar thing to the fullest? With some exceptions, most of the songs sound like they could have been easily enough done as a 3 piece.

I can’t argue with that or any of the messages. Martin played a part of the band that was different to what everyone else was doing.

I can’t think of any other way of playing the songs on Suicide pact except just as they are on record. They sound so good on record that it seems they could never be any better played in another way…

I can see Andy just grinning away during the playing of the songs on that record. Suicide pact rules.
