Manics… where to start?

#

Started by 30seconds

I’m asking everyone here including bad karma (who I believe is a manics fan).
I’ve already heard quite a few songs by them but never got around to getting any of their albums, there is so many to choose from. I’m already getting the holy bible, but what next? The greatest hits?

Any help would be aprreciated!

Greatest Hits and then decide which period Manics you like seems the obvious answer.

Personally I’d go for Generation Terrorists, when they were still young and exciting and playing G ‘n’ R-influenced rock but with straight-to-the-point political lyrics. And dressing up like big girls :D

After the Holy Bible I’d go for the US Remix ;)

Nah, my personal favourite after that would be Gold Against The Soul, but like Mr SD says, it’s up to you really.

The Manics have produced some great singles, so the greatest hits album would be a good start. Most people (myself included) seem to list The Holy Bible as their favourite album, although Generation Terrorists is a close second for me. I’ve not heard Gold Against the Soul (shame on me), but as it came out between the two aforementioned albums, I’d imagine it’s good.

The Manics are the most frustrating band in the world when they’re on form they’re brilliant but they’re also very lazy, complacent and content to be an MOR band.I’d go for The Holy Bible first, you can all their albums cheap now for under a fiver.

They do vary from the sublime to the ridiculous quite dramtically - a lot of their stuff is very dull. I quite like most of the best of though, but haven’t really heard anything more recent.

Everything Must Go if you fancy something on the slightly lighter, poppier route, but without and of the ‘dull’/MOR labels that some people throw at the later stuff.
Generation Terrorists I can’t stand, but it seems to be popular among a lot of fans. Guns’n’Roses meets The Clash, make of that what you will.
The other four albums involve taking a risk. You might love or hate ‘em. It seems to be quite random, really.

Richey Edwards’ influence is fucking overrated - all he did was write 2/3 of the lyrics! The music is the main reason for the greatness of THB.

The Manics themselves said THB was their most definitive period. And you should never underestimate the power of a good lyric - its what the man in the street identifies with. Rock hasn’t yet had its one true poet (anyone that thinks Dylan is amazing can fuck off). Richey was closer than most.

Avoid This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours, whatever you do.

Holy Bible is their definitive work, every home should have a copy of this album, no question.

Generation Terrorist has some great stuff but also some terrible tracks. Captures them at their early stages very well.

Gold Against the Soul is dismissed often as overpolished, but is far from being a Coldplay album. An underrated gem, I would argue.

Everything Must Go - Good, solid but beginning to shows signs of AOR rot setting in.

Know Your Enenmy. Patchy, underrated, great in places but very two-sided, as the rough and ready lo-fi tracks come side-to-side with cringe-worthy dross.

Lifeblood - Futuristic sounding in places, cold but not as bad as some would have you believe. Far from classic, mind.

Buffalo boy, shame on you! Have you even read any Dylan lyrics? You can’t compare the 2 really, its like comparing a car to a lump of cheese!! Richey wrote great lyrics for sure, theres no debating that, but yer man Dylan is on another planet. Do yourself a favor and read the lyrics to “desolation row”. Open your mind, B!

Back to the original topic, I wouldn’t bother with anything other than the holy bible, you aint missing much.

And then after, I might get ‘everything must go’. I won’t even bother with ‘This is my truth…’ as Ive got If you tolerate this… on mp3

The holy bible is indeed a classic, ifwhiteamericatoldthetruth… is the best song on that album in my opinion! I like the slower side and the darker side of the manics, both are excellent!

I don’t mind a healthy argument but please don’t tell me to open my mind - thats ridiculous! Why don’t you open your mind to the other Manics albums in that case!

Sigh.
Please re-read my post. I never said you had to like Dylan. I never mentioned like or dislike at all. I simply pointed out that if you say “if you say he’s amazing you can fuck off” is narrow minded, especially when you’re talking about someone so respected and influential.
Dylan’s lyrics don’t speak to you, personally, therefore anyone they do speak to can fuck off? Which part of that isn’t narrow minded?

Whats happening with the Manics? They haven’t done anything since the charity album.
Does anyone know what chart position …Richard Nixon got to? I know it was bad, just wondered exactly where it got!?

i have them all, they’re just not very good! A case of sounding dated for the most part i think. Only holy bible retains its impact because its peerless.

Here’s a link that has Richeys last gig.

They always wanted to be vital, and thats their only album that is! Though EMG is very good too apart from the lame indie guitar sound!

Ahaha. Calm down man.
Just don’t tell people to fuck off if they have a different opinion to you, yeah?

The Manics wanted to do an even more electronic album than Lifeblood, but then did that awful Help track and the EP that Sony wouldn’t fund which went in the other direction. So, as ever, we don’t really know what’s going on. I think we have JDB’s solo album first.
