Potato Junkie and ireland

#

Started by Gimme Back My Brainsaw

In school im currently studying Ireland as part as my GCSE history course and im chuffed to reveal the meaning of Potato Junkie, The song is called Potato Junkie after a famine in Ireland (most Irish Farms grew potato’s) which infuriated the Irish people who still today reckon England sabotaged their crops, When andy says How can i remember the 1690’s when i was born in 1965 he is refearing to a fight that took place near the river boyne in 1690 in which the english protestents defeted the Irish Catholics, today protestents grafitti the words remember boyne? in Northen Ireland (if we diddnt know were the ? in therapy? came from then im sure people would suggest this is the source) Im not sure who James Joyce is but i believe he is a former King of England who was kicked off the throne as he was Catholic and moved to Ireland.

Some of you probably kbow this, but i thought i’d share my knowledge of Irish History as it has an importand influence on this song which i respect as a nod to the Irish people who dont give a shit about their history and just want to get on with life.

Well, not really got enough to say on the matter to warrant a decent post. But James Joyce is a famous irish writer from the late 1800’s to the early-mid 1900’s. Also wrote a multi-piece work of poetry titled ‘Chamber Music’ that you might know of Syd Barrett’s song ‘Golden Hair’. Or, you might not. Ah well..

James Joyce surely wasn’t an english king, he’s one of the most well-known irish writers.
His opus magnum is ‘Ulysses’ which covers the events of one single day on more than a thousand pages of inner monologue.

See, the idea for the series ‘24’ isn’t that fresh. ;)

The title ‘jude the obscene’ is also a reference to James Joyce.

\literature lecture over.

It’s actually a Thomas Hardy reference :p Jude The Obscure’s a great book by the way.

I think the James Joyce ref in Potato Junkie is about some well-read, over-educated wanker who fancies himself as a bit of a writer / spokesperson for Irish politics (hold on, sounds like me so far ;)) getting into Andy’s sis.

By the way I SERIOUSLY doubt the ? mark refers to that piece of grafitti

:p I love the way you confidently enter debates with conclusive ‘facts’ - that are completely wrong :p

The one about the band Zyklon’s name that you came up with a while back was another one :D

JUDE THE OBSCENE is actually a reference to a german writer called Patrick Süskind. he wrote “Das Parfüm” and the song is a reference to this book… thats what i’ve heard!!!

now andy please continue to start writing in “the meaning of the songs” collection! ;)

Well you should give it a go - life imitating art and all that ;)

I’m saying nothing - the band members sometimes read these forums  ;)

Well, they might have got it from Suskind, but he would have got it from Hardy, so :p

It’s kind of like The Doors - they got their name from Huxley’s “The Doors of Perception” but he got it from a William Blake poem in turn

ah, fuck you, I did it again! I deeply apologise. :)

BUT I remember Andy himself saying the title was a reference to Joyce in an interview. I’ll try to dig that one up again to prove that I’m innocent ;)

And gapu is right about the rest of the ‘jude the obscene’ lyrics as vast parts of the lyrics are copy-pasted from the english version of süßkinds ‘perfume’. fact.

Plus: ‘Zyklon’ is indeed the eye of a hurricane. :p

I don’t think the title Potato Junkie is necessarily a reference to the potato famine - I think it is probably just poking fun at the (accurate) stereotype that we Irish eat a ridiculous amount of spuds!

Also think you’re far off the mark that Potato Junkie has anything to do with the famine and/or Irish politics ( esp The Battle of the Boyne ).
From occasionally talking to Andy I know he’s not into all this Irish vs British bullshit at all , just like the big majority both in the Republic and up North who just mind their business and want to get on with their lives and make the best of it.
Hence the T? quote : ” Fuck Politics , Let’s Rock ! ”

As for the questionmark , as far as I know it ended up behind the band name completely by mistake ( a typo ) in the early days and the band just left it there as they thought it looked okay ( but I stand to be corrected on this one ).

The 1690 reference is definately about the Boyne.

But, Andy says “how can I remember 1690, I was born in 1965” which basically says “fuck history, live in the present”. It’s a dig at the Loyalists.

Similarly, “you think that green’s the only colour on the atlas” is making a similar point, except this one’s aimed at the Nationalists.

Potato Junkie is a total piss-take of the Nationalist/Loyalist fued and Andy’s wish not to be a part of it - “I can see you, I can read you, I won’t be you” …

Yeah man, some real deep lyrics there! Say, if, as Andy says, you live like a fucker you’ll die like a motherfucker, does that mean that if you live like a motherfucker you’ll die merely like a fucker?

well to be fair BB i think we need to set up some kind of system whereby we can actually witness each of the following:

A motherfucker dying like a fucker
A fucker dying like a motherfucker

Then you can take notes, weigh up the pros and cons, and make a decision as to which method suits you.

I’ve always kinda thought i’d like to die like a wheezy old bastard in my pyjamas, clutching my zimmer frame with the last bolt of strength i can muster before leaving this cruel place, but knowing there are other options out there i’d like to see whats on offer, y’know?

Close. Andy was using a lectraset (I think that’s what they’re called :s) and misjudged it and there was a space at the end so he stuck the ‘?’ on :)

I don’t know anyone here who believes the English sabotaged our crops. The famine was not localized in Ireland, the potato blight was all across England, Scotland and Northern Europe, it’s only elevated to catastrophe status in Ireland because the majority of the population depended on them as the staple of their diet.
