T? coverband Potato Junkies

#

Started by kossu (Petri Koskiniemi)

will play at the local punk club “Vastavirta Klubi” here in Tampere/Finland next wednesday 25.01. There will be three other bands too and the night is called “Rock for the dog 3”.
Potato Junkies includes couple of members of the rising young finnish band Bloodpit and two other finnish T? “freaks”.
So all U finnish T? (who live in the Tampere area or near here)fans, see U there if U can make it. We´ll take the gig on vid if possible and post it then to Michael so T? can see and hear how the “Potato band” sounds and looks like on the stage.

Anyone happen to know any other T? coverbands around the globe these days. What I remember there was an german posse who played T? songs acoustic outside the venues in Germany, where T? had their gigs in the late 90ies (so before the gigs and then the lads were invaited in as guests to the T? gigs), am I right about that…?

Yees, I´ll try! Will ask the lads first if they want that someone will tape them..I have filmed many bands in that club so that won´t cause any problems at all, I know the staff;)By theway, that band plays VERY well!

Bloodpit guys said in an finnish musicmag, Soundi, that “Troublegum” is the most infulencial album no:1 for the whole band, so I guess there will be a lot of songs of that T? era in their set…
Like I said earlier, the Bloodpit lads can play, so I think it will be a one hell of a interesting evening:)

just got home back from VastaVirta Klubi.
Here´s the setlist:
Meat Abstract
Opal Mantra
Punishment Kiss
Accelator
Neck Freak
Innocent X
Nausea
Potato Junkie

Paavo: guitar and lead vocals
Matthau: bass and backing vocals
Ilari: drums

So it was almost the whole Bloodpit gang and they played weeeeelll! I´m really happy this happened!!!Years and years I`ve wished that some band would play T? stuff and now it happened!
Talked to Paavo before they played and he said that they only had practised two times before this first Potato Junkies gig: amazing how fine and sharp they played:) Those guys can play, that´s for sure:cool:
Paavo said when I saw the setlist before the gig that he doesn´t want to sing fresher material this time cause he cannot sing like Andy (as i thought earlier they would play Gum stuff mostly..), he wants to practise more of that melodic singing.
More Potato gigs will see they´re daylight for sure in future, the dudes promised us!!So beware Hellsinki:)
Tampere is a rockcity for sure!!!
almost forgot: the set is on video, Michael and others, copies will reach you during winter/spring -06!
link to Bloodpit site, CHECK IT OUT!:

now I´ll rest down and sleep as I/we have to go to work early:(

Sounds like a good night! Good songs but they should definately get some better known songs to the setlist, like Screamager, Knives, etc. You know the drill. :p

I was surprised that Matthau played bass. Also I was relieved that they didn’t had Bloodpit’s drummer, as he is pants. Or at least at Tavastia he sucked.

Also what wonders was that there wasn’t any info at Bloodpit’s page about this coverband. Do you know kossu who this Ilari fellow is? Is he a good drummer? And so you know is Paavo’s father Safka Pekkonen? As they have same lastname?

I was a bit surprised too when I saw the selist before the gig, and I asked that why not Gum songs at all.Paavo they wanted to play the older stuff. Paavo said that if this gig goes well, they practise more of the other albums too.
This was the first time for Paavo as a leadsinger as he sings the backingvocals on their own gigs.
Kati said that it is hard to compaire his vice to Andy`s cause our hero has got such an unique voice, but Paavo did it well, we think.
We didn´t talk about Safka, but I´ve heard from other sources that he is Paavo´s daddy. I bet you knew Marko this already: Mattahau is brother to Christus from Negative and their father is/was the late Arwo T. Mikkonen from Popeda.
So the talent of playing and singing goes in the family with those boys:)
I didn´t talk so much with Ilari but I guess he´s the drummer of Bloodpit. He wasn´t a lauzy drummer at all!!!ROK!

Thanks Petri, I just watched the tape!

It’s very strange to watch a hairy guy play Michael’s basslines :p
They did it very well, but they don’t have the energy Therapy? has.
I really enjoyed this, and would definatly go to see them if they came to belgium! I hope they’ll go on with this!
The only thing I couldn’t get into, was the vocals, but that’s probably me, I’m always complaining about vocals, this is a live recording from a voice I’m not used to, that could also be the reason.
but err… thumbs up!!!

:) Nice that you liked it! Feel free to copy it forward to other wombles (or anyone else:))cause I haven´t got to time to make copies..got the time tickin´in my head (Anthrax):)
Like I said earlier, this was the first time Paavo was singing leadvocals (so he said to me..)
Really liked the boys playing. Keepin the thumbs up for them! BTW; Bloodpit will play (their own stuff) in Los Angeles USA during this spring: there´s somekinda finnish showcase gig for rising finnish new bands.

Even though they played older songs and set was short I really enjoyed this alot. I think it is great the young fellas like Bloodpit appreciates Therapy?s music so much that they perform their songs live (and only their songs).

I really hope that they keep on doing this… I was really surprised how good they played the songs through, there is moments you would thought there is Therapy? playing. :D

Thanks for letting us see this Pete!

Go fellows and check out Bloodpit´s own website, it´s a really good band!!:

Thanks for reminding me Petri ;)

Yep, excellent stuff from the Bloodpit guys - Meat Abstract & Innocent X especially were excellently executed(!). It’s really interesting to know that a group of Finnish guys are doing this stuff, and in Ireland nobody will even cover a single Therapy? song, nevermind a whole set!

If these guys don’t get a support slot (playing their own ‘Bloodpit’ stuff, of course), then it’s a real shame.

Maybe if they play a Therapy? covers set again they could add some of the newer stuff, which shouldn’t be a problem with T? back to a 3 piece… but yeah, a great effort all round!

Yeah, the guys give their full respect to T?. As Paavo (the guitarist and singer in this project) told me, he grow up with T? tunes and T? has infulenced his own playing very much. He is the biggest T? fan of these guys, I guess…Matthau is more into glam stuff and heavier bands.

Yeah, I think those guys like Hanoi too(like I do, the earlier eighties “real Hanoi”)! Matthau plays bass in Potato but in Bloodpit he plays the guitar and he´s the leadsinger. Just saw their video for their single “Platitude”. Nice clip in “The Shining” movie mood.
Bloodpit will play Whiskey A Go Go in LA (20th of may..), in the beginning of may..Go check it out if anybody of you Wombles happen to stumble out there during that day…And shout “PLAY SOME T?”!:)I guess they´ll play their own stuff after all!
