The Clash

#

Started by Dennis

Any Clash fans out there in WoM World?

I am just getting started on them , as I picked up the excellent “Passion Is A Fashion” biography in HMV for £2.99, which inspired me in turn to dig out my hardly-ever-touched “Story of The Clash” compilation which in turn made me buy the “Westway To The World” DVD.

Some great (but oh too short) live footage on the DVD - I was a big Manics fan early on in their career and now I can see exactly why they were dismissed as Clash-copyists at the beginning, so many stolen ideas!

Which albums should I get?

(I will be avoiding “Cut The Crap”, for a start!)

Oi , The Clash are great ! Grew up listening to them ( showing my age here ).

My personal favos would include some really early ones like ‘Rockers Galore’.
Not to be missed are also their more well-kwon albums like ‘From Here To Eternity’ and ‘Sandinista’.

Joe Strummer LEGEND !

To call a cliché, ‘London Calling’ is essential. And the debut.

Interesting, cos “Sandinista!” gets, let’s say, mixed reviews in most quarters..

Maybe a good album or double should’ve been made out of it? Can’t offer an opinoin myself, ain’t heard the bugger yet!

There’s some interesting stuff on Sandinista but quite a bit of filler as well.

A few weeks back i saw the Essential Clash compilation for 6 quid in Tescos,it might be a good place to start and that way you can decide which studio album to buy.

Give’em enough rope not bad too,but I heard they were charged with being too much “heavy metal” with that one, maybe because of the big sound on that album. It took me time to appreciate Sandinista! and Combat Rock( I found they begun to become “mainstream” with that one…).

Thanks.

Funny how the whole Cut The Crap debacle was missing from the Westway To The World DVD… You’d at least have thought Mick Jones would’ve got a dig in, you know “What the F*CK was THAT b*ll*x?!” kinda thing :D

They have some great stuff but I find a few of their albums too overproduced. They have that “Wall of Sound” thing going and I think it ruins some of the songs.

I have most of The Clash albums, but only just picked up the “From Here To Eternity” live CD the other week, for the bargain price of £5 from the music shop Fopp. Fantatsic album with The Clash on top form and makes me wish even more that I could have seen them live.

London calling and Sandinista are classic albums. When Joe Strummer (rip) was asked to replace Shane MacGowan (also rip) The Pogues did a fantastic London calling.

:D But I’m disappointed: I was expecting it to quote him as saying ‘For fuck’s sake, I’m NOT Shaun Ryder!’

No, there should have been a comma after the ‘ah’ and the ‘still’. And you misspelt the first ‘still’. So no, not happy.

And after reading more of the clash book i really must go out and buy the clash’s self titled album. All i’ve got is London calling, Combat Rock and this rare songs compilation, i’ve forgot what it’s called. Something along the lines of Black market clash
