The indie thread

#

Started by 30seconds

I really don’t care if any of you don’t like indie, but if you want to discuss any indie bands you like, then this is the place.

Any new indie bands you like?

Some great ones you should check out, which I like are:

My morning jacket
Clap your hands say yeah(like arcade fire, but more uplifting)
Art brut(think the streets, but more rock’n’roll)
Architecture in helsinki
!forward russia!
wolf parade
The rakes
the futureheads
The golden virgins
Bright eyes(and no, its not emo!)
Broken social scene

And some more well known ones that are equally great:
The editors
Interpol
British sea power

There is a fantastic indie scene at the moment, I think fiestaboy would agree.

And on another note, the arctic monkeys album is great, but still not worth the hype.

I’m not going thru an Indie phase at the moment, but if there’s a band that stand out as the pick of the bunch at the moment, it’d be Maximo Park for my money.

The Artcic Monkeys, despite the hype, are actually quite a nice breath of fresh air too.

Hate Franz Ferdinand and their ilk, though…

but nevertheless, germany has a great indie scene at the moment, with bands like Nova International, Slut, Anajo, WSH, Schrottgrenze, Muff Potter, Madsen, Tomte, Blackmail, etc.

Are Franz being classed as indie then? I didn’t think they had a genre. I do like arctic monkeys though, did one of their songs on karaoke last week.

Ah, my least favourite word in music. I’m still yet to understand how Belle & Sebastian and Pavement can be called the same thing.

Errrrrr. I haven’t listened to much indie stuff lately, although I have a fair amount. Of all the NME bands, the only one like is The Coral, although The Strokes’ first record is fucking great (shame about the other two), and Franz Ferdinand have their moments.

And on other indie stuff, Mercury Rev are one of my favourite bands. And I suppose The Shins, Saturday Looks Good To Me, The Flaming Lips and The Wedding Present should be mentioned.

Agreed ;)
New album soon, very excited about this one.

About maximo park, I don’t reckon they’re that good. They aren’t doing anything particuarly innovative and I don’t think that in a few years time they will still be gracing the music scene.

Got to be honest, I don’t really listen to much recent indie. I like the classic bands like the Smiths and Stone Roses, but that’s about it.

Hard to believe that T? were considered an indie band at one time. I do remember, the indie band that metal kids would like, that was the saying, all those years ago.

Well they haven’t updated the site since december, and they’ve closed down the message board for a few months so its been very hard to keep track on the recording of the new album.

As I have mentioned before though they are aiming for a heavier direction in the next album, much to the dissapointment of myself, who is a big fan of ‘As the cry flows’.

I like either way, they can do light and heavy stuff very well.

I’ve heard kill kenada, not too bad, wasn’t inclined to check them out further though.

‘Post punk’…whatever they are, they’re still great. Seeing the editors in Feb, only thing is, the songs are a bit repetitive.

Do you mean in the sense that all the songs sound too similar, or that the individual songs are repetitive? I’d agree with the second, though I quite like them like that.

:p

Its still good though, anyone know what ‘the brakes’ are like? They are supporting the editors when I see them in Norwich. I heard that it features a member of British sea power…

Hehe, you really know me well.

Arctic Monkeys’ album is great. I would even like it better if I wouldn’t wander all the time “I like this but I can’t see what’s the hype is about, this is just a really good indie album”. I like The Kooks, The Infadels, Apartment and The Longcut at the time being.

Oh, no, not the kooks!! I don’t really like them to be honest, they aren’t that great, musically.

I haven’t heard anything by the Infadels! Would you recommend them? what dfo they sound like…

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this, or if they are indie, but My morning jackets album ‘Z’ is a classic!

(I know indie is short for independent, but that doesn’t cover it all imo)

You’re quite right, The editors are probably not indie, but they are not signed to a major label which defines indie, though the term is widely misused. I’m pretty sure i’ve misused the term before, and probably in this thread too.

Indie can also mean a DIY attitude to music though which alot of new bands have.

I’m pretty sure Spitfire is not associated at all with a major label, so they would qualify in the indie charts.

I know The Delays for 2 years now. I absolutely love them. I put on Faded Seaside Glamour on at least every 2 weeks to get that summer feeling. If you like his voice, check out The Veils. I’m really looking forward to the new records by those 2 bands, both released in the near future.
