One of Andy’s diary entries just broke my heart

I just caught up with the band’s diary entries of the last months and one of them broke my heart:

Quote (author unknown):

the song writing itself is eclectic. there’s moments of “what should i be today?”. I can write pop songs alright but is that what i want to be doing? Pop-rock is a funny currency. When you get it right, in our case, with Screamager, Nowhere, If it Kills Me etc. it can be exhilarating and the melody and conviction of the song raises it above being just another of a million melodic rock songs but when you get it not-so-right, lonely cryin’ only, Voodoo Doll it could be any other band and also betrays the true nature of what we’re actually about as a band.

I really like “Voodoo Doll” and I LOVE “Lonely, Cryin’, Only”. It’s definitely in my top 3 of Therapy?-songs. What’s not to love about it? The lyrics are great, the recording is brilliant and the music isn’t obtrusive, but genuinely beautiful. It definitely doesn’t sound like any other band. Yes, it’s a nod to Roy Orbison but totally Therapy? Now I’ve lost all hope that I’m ever going to hear this song live again. Unfortunately, that seems to be the case with most of the “Semi-Detached” album, which is one of the band’s finest moments, in my opinion.

andy had said about lonely cryin’ only and some more of semi detached that he regrets it didn’t come out the way he really wanted it. i’m sure he likes the songs alright but i guess if he had a chance to do them again he would change them and do them as he really imagined them to be.

You can’t help when you get into Therapy? until you hear them for the very first time for them to allow you to be blown away - that first song (for me) was “Lonely Cryin’ Only” :(

And I fucking love “Voodoo Doll” - punktastic!

But I wouldn’t say these songs are your typical “pop-punk” efforts that you hear all the time. I’m not a huge fan of the genre but Therapy? do it with a certain class. Tend to have their own ‘twisted’ edge.

I think Andy has his own idea of what Therapy? is and thats cool, and I’ll buy and support them forever. I’ve seen a interview where he said if the band carried on making so-called ‘pop’ songs then he’d think the fans would discard and say ‘this isn’t Therapy?!?!?’ - which I can’t totally agree. Don’t get me wrong I’ve enjoyed every T? release but they’ve gone from many musical changes in their career (which I love mostly) to be stuck to one particular sound. So I’m not sure what the defining sound that describes Therapy? is, and I kinda like it that way.:)But I suppose: ‘Babyteeth’ - ‘Suicide Pact’ and NANE, would be good examples.

Maybe, Andy also judges album/songs by the time period as well? I think its only nowadays he’s agreed that ‘Infernal Love’ is a brillant album but didn’t at the time for obvious reasons. Wish he could feel the same about all his efforts. I’m NOT downcasting him as I think he’s a genius truth be told.

End of the day I’m thankful for every song created by the band. From album to single to b-side and beyond.

God bless!

i agree with Andy to a certain extent. “lonely…” is a fanTASTIC tune, one of my favorites for sure, but replace the vox with someone elses and it could be a song by anyone, cos it hasn’t got that Therapy? “sound”. Same with “loose” i think. Great songs, mind, like i said. But T? have got a very definitive sound, and i think they’ve stuck to it more closely over the last clutch of releases than they did in the mid 90’s.

Just a weird question , how many of the WoMs here actually have the phone intro ( ‘leave the message or leave me alone’ ) recorded as their voicemail ?

My brother had it, too.

Anyway, I don’t think “Lonely, Cryin’ Only” or even “Voodoo Doll” sound like pop/punk. Not in a negative way anyway. Therapy? are always miles ahead of bands like Blink 182, Sum 41 and Green Day, too, just because their sound is so distinctive and, like another user already said, twisted.
The one time Andy got close to writing a song that sounded as if he had forced its catchiness was “Loose”, IMO, and that’s still a great tune. I don’t know. Andy’s very modest about his songwriting abilities, but he’s an absolute giant.

Personally, I like Therapy? best when they play the most melodic, catchy and beautiful melodies and make them sound really noisy and heavy. I think, the only other band that’s been able to compete with them at this game were The Wildhearts in their prime.

I love the contrast between the likes of Voodoo Doll and Rise Up. Thats one of the best things about Therapy?, if all the songs where in the same vein it would get boring and tired.

Lonely Cryin Only doesn’t really have a classic T? sound granted, but again, thats why its good. Diversity, while still remaining in the same ball park.

I certainly wouldn’t change anything about T? and their discography. Well, maybe the second half of Shameless… (sorry!)

Voodoo doll is the only therapy? song i outright hate. It just sounds annoying and whiney and screams album filler track. I expect shite like that from the likes of the teletubbies or bob the builder, not therapy?

Lonely cryin only is brilliant. Its always a bit of a wind up when therapy put down their really great songs and albums. You notice that every time they record the new album they make out as if the last was not that good or they didnt fully realise it. Im sorry but i had no complaints about shameles high anxiety or NANE, except voodoo doll cos that song is just the musical equivelent of barrymore swimming pool incidents, avoid if you can.

Lets have some evil elvis on the next tour ay lads.

Never listen to a band and their ramblings on their music. They’re too close to the songs to get an accurate understanding of what it’s like for other people. Andy likely just doesn’t hear what he heard in his head, it doesn’t mean the songs are bad. Both of those songs are excellent! Andy is crazy! =)

Oh what do people think of Titanic, the earlier version of Lonely Crying Only (its a demo I think)

I preferred it to the album version.

I remember an interview where Andy said that he really liked Lonely Crying Only. I don’t think you should read too much into what the band say about certain songs…they change their minds just like eveyone else.

I happen to like those pop/punk songs. They’re dark and catchy at the same time. Suppose Andy has a different view to those songs as the years pass by, and that’s only natural.
