Who else runs? Who did a marathon last year? Anyone doing any runs this year? Anyone got any hints, tips and advice to share?

Enquiring minds need to know!

Are you sure that’s Jimmy Saville? It looks more like Paul Daniels impersonating Jimmy.

I used to go running 2 x per week, but to be honest i didn’t really benefit from it - swimming is far better for all your muscles and more relaxing after a hard day arguing with WOM’s on here! Running just made my ankles hurt and my legs stiffen.

The only tip I have is have some music to listen to. Running is so fucking boring, it’s almost as bad as aerobics.

Funnily enough, I just started up again on Tuesday, after not having been out for a run since Christmas Eve

Two days later, my legs are still aching, but if I can get back into it, it’ll be worth it.

I first started a couple of years back, and was running 3 to 5 miles anywhere between twice and four times a week. I got fit for the first time in my whole life and lost all the excess weight. Even did the Great North Run (half marathon).

Have let it slide of late, but hopefully I will get back into it and back into shape.

Best advice is to go regularly and time yourself each time, so you can see the improvements (which come surprisingly quickly and regularly) but don’t push yourself too hard and overdo it.

Oh yeah, and do lots of stretching and warming up before you go.

I have done 2 marathons so far, both times in Rotterdam. In 2004 I finished in 3.48.37 and last year in 3.25.33. The 9th of April i’ll be doing it again. I am running for charity as well, for the World Cancer Relief Fund. My goal will be beating last year’s time. Due to an accident I only have been training since the 22nd of February so I am really working my arse off, until D-day no beers for this man so those 2 JackDaniels Rocknights will be in total sobriety for me:p

Advice:

1.Get yourself a proper pair of shoes in a store that is specialized in running.

2.Ask somebody who knows about running to give you advice about your technique

3.Don’t overdo it because the main thing is that you enjoy it.

4.If you are gonna do the marathon make sure you drink plenty during the race, preferably a little bit too much than too less.

5.You obviously love music, so take an MP3player with you with all your favourite tunes( full battery required). It will help you when it gets though. Hearing Accelerator after 35 kilometers can really make you forget those heavy legs;)

6. Make sure you eat the right food in the weeks before the marathon.

7.Run Forrest Run

Good Luck!

I’m at 1948, 20 euro now and unlike the other years I am a bit nervous anyway, busy day preparing for tomorrow!

Can’t wait for that beer tomorrow in the afternoon!

Well done! That’s far too fast a time for me to aim to beat though (maybe if I change the 3 to a 4…)

Will get round to doing a proper response to this thread at some point!

It takes a lot of willpower not to drink while at a Therapy? gig - I did it the last time they played in Dublin and it was tough, which may explain why I drank so much at the Dutch shows! :D

TURNING THE GUNZ INTO CANNONZ!!!

This phrase really amused me & I admit to having used it a lot since you posted it, mainly when talking to the nicer ladies at my work, with an added ‘baby’ at the end. I do hope you don’t mind.

Right, my reason for starting this thread was that I hope to do a marathon next summer, although have no plans at doing it in the heroic times Ronald has achived (sir, we salute you!) and will probably plump for the Midnight Sun Marathon in Tromso in June

I’m doing the Great North & South Runs this year in October (and the Nike 10k - http://www.runlondon.com & choose NORTH!) & doing a fair bit of training at present in preparation (on accounbt of not being v fit, rather than being v fit, before our dear Sarah has visions of Adonis like grace & athletism). I’m currently quite happy running for 6 miles (so, some way to go then) & do have proper running shoes.

Any other hints and tips (esp from Ronald because youve been there maaaan welcomed.
